Ikerbasque, the Basque platform of researchers, has announced the invention of an artery in 3D dimension in order to facilitate studies of cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary illnesses and tests on new medication.
This project is a collaboration between Ikerbasque and CIC biomaGUNE, directed by Jesús Ruiz Cabello, a professor of the former. On the one hand, Ikerbasque is a platform of collaboration of researchers and institutions that has sought to be a stable and motivating platform from which researchers from scientific institutions from the Basque country can continue to ask new questions and contribute to the challenge of generating new knowledge. On the other hand, CIC biomaGUNE is a non-profit research organization created to promote scientific research and technological innovation at the highest level in the Basque Country.
Dorleta Jiménez de Aberasturi, who has been part of the project as a researcher from Ikerbasque, highlights the relevance and necessity of a 3D dimension artery. She states that cells cannot be analyzed two-dimensionally because they are surrounded by tissues that without 3D dimension cannot be observed. So, researchers with tridimensional printers are creating all those layers that surround the cells using organic material (polymers), cellular material (proper cells) and nanoparticles (in order to obtain the physical stimuli to the model). The Basque researcher has also pointed out the importance of the environment in which the artery is preserved as a means to obtain a real representation.
The aim of this creation is to obtain the proper pulse of a real artery to further develop the investigation of illnesses. Therefore, the invention of the tridimensional artery marks a before and after, leaving behind the classic two-dimensional “in vitro” plates used until now.
Investigadores vascos crean una arteria en dimensión 3D
Ikerbasque, una plataforma vasca de investigadores, ha anunciado la invención de una arteria en dimensión 3D para facilitar los estudios de enfermedades cardiovasculares y cardiopulmonar, además de pruebas de nuevos medicamentos.
El proyecto es una colaboración entre Ikerbasque y CIC biomaGUNE, dirigido por Jesús Ruiz Cabello, un profesor de la primera. Por un lado, Ikerbasque es una plataforma de colaboración de investigadores e instituciones que pretende ser estable y motivadora para investigadores e instituciones vascas y así estos puedan continuar realizando preguntas y generando nuevo conocimiento. Por otro lado, CIC biomaGUNE es una organización sin ánimo de lucro que pretende promocionar investigaciones científicas e innovaciones tecnológicas al máximo nivel en el País Vasco.
Dorleta Jiménez de Aberasturi, quien ha formado parte de este proyecto como investigadora de Ikerbasque, ha resaltado la importancia y necesidad de una arteria en tres dimensiones. Ha afirmado que las células no pueden ser analizadas de la mejor manera de forma bidimensional puesto que estas están rodeadas de tejidos que de esta forma no pueden ser observadas. Por ello, los investigadores con impresoras en tres dimensiones están creando todas estas capas que rodean la célula usando materiales orgánicos (polímeros), material celular (propias células)y nanopartículas (para obtener el estímulo físico del modelo). La investigadora vasca también ha resaltado la importancia de un entorno adecuado para preservar la arteria y, así, obtener una representación real.
El principal objetivo de esta creación es obtener un pulso apropiado de una arteria real para seguir desarrollando investigaciones sobre enfermedades. Por lo tanto, la invención de una arteria tridimensional marca un antes y un después, dejando atrás las clásicas placas “in vitro” bidimensionales.
