Bilbao has been recognized as the tenth best large European city in attracting foreign direct investment by the magazine fDi Intelligence, belonging to the prestigious publishing group Financial Times in its ranking “European Cities and Regions of the Future 2022-2023”.
In the assessment 370 European cities have been analyzed and Bilbao has been awarded with the tenth position for its economic strengths, business fabric and financial capacity. In addition, the capital of Bizkaia is now considered a city of size.
To date, the magazine had included it in its annual rankings as a medium-sized city, which is why it has been placed as a large city, which is also a step forward in the worldwide recognition of Bilbao as an investment city and in its importance in attracting and retaining talent for the competitiveness of the city and its social welfare.
Thus, Bilbao is the only large city in Spain to be included in the ranking and competes with cities such as Porto (Portugal), Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester (United Kingdom), Antwerp (Belgium) or Gothenburg (Sweden).
In addition, fDi Intelligence ranks the Basque Country sixth in the “Top 10 Mid-Sized European Regions Of The Future 2023 – Fdi Strategy”. The first three places are occupied, respectively, by Northern Ireland, Tuscany and the Greater Canton of Zurich.

Bilbao ha sido reconocida como la décima mejor ciudad europea de tamaño grande en atracción de inversión extranjera directa por la revista fDi Intelligence, perteneciente al prestigioso grupo editorial Financial Times en su ranking “European Cities and Regions of the Future 2022-2023”.
En la valoración 370 ciudades europeas han sido analizadas y Bilbao ha sido premiada con la décima posición por sus fortalezas económicas, el tejido empresarial y su capacidad financiera. Además, la capital vizcaína ha pasado a ser considerada como ciudad de tamaño.
Hasta la fecha, la revista la había incluido en sus rankings anuales como ciudad de tamaño medio; es por esto que situarla como urbe de gran tamaño supone también un avance en el reconocimiento mundial de Bilbao como ciudad de inversiones y en su importancia en la atracción y retención del Talento para la competitividad de la Villa y su bienestar social.
Así, Bilbao es la única localidad de tamaño grande, a nivel estatal, presente en el ranking y compite con ciudades de la talla de Oporto (Portugal), Birmingham, Glasgow y Manchester (Reino Unido), Amberes (Bélgica) o Gotemburgo (Suecia).
Además, fDi Intelligence posiciona a Euskadi en el sexto puesto del “Top 10 Mid-Sized European Regions Of The Future 2023 – Fdi Strategy”. Ocupan los tres primeros puestos, respectivamente, Irlanda del Norte, Toscana y el Cantón Mayor de Zúrich.
