The prestigious scientific society Design Research Society selected the city of Bilbao to organize its biannual congress. This event brings together the most important international references in design research and is co-organized by the Bilbao City Council and the Higher Technical School of Architecture of the UPV/EHU.
La prestigiosa sociedad científica Design Research Society seleccionó a la ciudad de Bilbao para organizar su congreso bianual. Este evento congrega a los mayores referentes internacionales en investigación en diseño y está coorganizado por el Ayuntamiento de Bilbao y la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de la UPV/EHU.
From June 25 to July 3, Bilbao will host the biannual DRS2022 congress of the Design Research Society, Europe’s oldest academic society dedicated to the study and research of the design process in its many fields. The Bilbao City Council and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), through the School of Architecture, organize this event of worldwide relevance competing with some of the best universities in the world. The jury especially valued the involvement and contribution of the city. Previous editions were held in places such as London, Brisbane, Lisbon, Montreal or Bangkok, among others.
The congress program includes three presentations of global relevance around food, urban habitat and ecosystems, more than 40 workshops, a Fringe festival, 5 Labs that will put the Basque university environment in contact with international academic institutions to address major challenges for Bilbao. Although the main venue will be the Bizkaia Aretoa, the meeting will be open to other spaces such as the Guggenheim Museum, Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao, IED Kunsthal and the Ensanche Building.
For the Bilbao City Council, this event joins the events that are already taking place, which means the return to the big international events after the pandemic. “This edition -they affirm- is going to break all records of participation with more than 750 participants, of which about 550 will be in person at the event. The biannual DRS conference defines the academic and research landscape for the coming years in design research. This is a field of work and research that studies the processes and methodology of designing any artificial human product, understood in a broad sense and referring to any creation or advancement in the creations of mankind.”
He adds that “both for the University of the Basque Country and for the School of Architecture and the Faculty of Fine Arts, which also takes part, and even for disciplines such as engineering, it is an opportunity to find an area of research and knowledge transfer of their own. Often these disciplines do not find it as easy to research and/or publish in indexed editions as the natural sciences do. Specifically, the Design Research Society is the publisher of ‘Design Studies’, the number one indexed journal in the design world.”

The Design Research Society is a scientific and academic society whose mission is the promotion and development of design research and has more than 900 members. It is also the world’s oldest multidisciplinary society for the study and research of the design process in its many fields. Del 25 de junio al 3 de julio Bilbao acogerá el congreso bianual DRS2022 de la Design Research Society, la sociedad académica más antigua de Europa, dedicada al estudio y la investigación del proceso de diseño en sus numerosos campos.
El Ayuntamiento de Bilbao y la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU), a través de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura, organizan este evento de relevancia mundial compitiendo con algunas de las mejores universidades del mundo. El jurado valoró especialmente la implicación y aportación de la ciudad. Anteriores ediciones se celebraron en lugares como Londres, Brisbane, Lisboa, Montreal o Bangkok, entre otros.
El programa del congreso engloba tres ponencias de relevancia mundial en torno a la alimentación, al hábitat urbano y a los ecosistemas, más de 40 workshops, un festival Fringe, 5 Labs que pondrá en contacto el ámbito universitario vasco con entidades académicas internacionales para abordar retos de calado para Bilbao. Aunque la sede principal será el Bizkaia Aretoa, el encuentro se abrirá a otros espacios como el Museo Guggenheim, Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao, IED Kunsthal y el Edificio Ensanche.
Para el Ayuntamiento de Bilbao este certamen se suma a los eventos que ya se están celebrando, lo que supone la vuelta a las grandes citas internacionales tras la pandemia. “Esta edición –afirman– va a romper todos los records de participación con más de 750 participantes, de los cuales unos 550 estarán en persona en el evento. La conferencia bianual de la DRS define el panorama académico e investigador para los próximos años en investigación en diseño. Este es un campo de trabajo e investigación que estudia los procesos y metodología de diseño de cualquier producto humano artificial, entendido esto en sentido amplio y referido a cualquier creación o avance en las creaciones de la humanidad.”
Para la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU), en palabras del profesor de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura, Juan Sádaba, “no se trata únicamente de ‘diseño’ como lo entendemos habitualmente referido a actividades más relacionadas con la estética o las artes sino al equivalente de la investigación de lo natural por las ciencias naturales transportado a la investigación de lo ‘artificial’”.
Añade que “tanto para la Universidad del País Vasco como para la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura y la Facultad de Bellas Artes, que también toma parte, e incluso para disciplinas como las ingenierías, supone una oportunidad para encontrar un ámbito de investigación y transferencia del conocimiento propio. A menudo estas disciplinas no encuentran la misma facilidad para investigar y/o publicar en ediciones indexadas que la que tiene las ciencias naturales. En concreto, la Design Research Society es la editora de ‘Design Studies’, la publicación indexada número uno en el mundo del diseño.”

La Design Research Society es una sociedad científica y académica que tiene como misión la promoción y el desarrollo de la investigación en diseño y que cuenta con más de 900 socios. Es, además, la sociedad mundial multidisciplinaria más antigua para el estudio y la investigación del proceso de diseño en sus numerosos campos.
