Coinalde: nail manufacturing with a focus on efficiency / fabricación de clavos con el objetivo puesto en la eficiencia

Posted on October 4, 2021October 19, 2021 by info

In recent years, the Alava-based company has been immersed in a process of restructuring and renovation of its production systems to improve efficiency and productivity. It now has machines that can produce up to 2,500 nails per minute.

Nowadays, the nail is a so-called ‘commodity’ product, that is to say, a low-priced product with hardly any differentiation or specialization among its manufacturers. For this reason, it is difficult for the Basque Country to compete with other places with lower production costs. But there are success stories, such as that of the Alava-based company Coinalde, which has focused in recent years on productivity and Industry 4.0 to achieve the efficiency that allows it to differentiate itself in this market.

Coinalde has a total workforce of 52 people distributed between its sites in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Jelcz-Laskowice (Poland), and specializes in the manufacture of nails. Ninety percent of its production is destined for companies in the pallet and packaging sector, with the remaining 10% going to the construction industry. The company manufactures all types of nails, from 2.5 mm to 9 mm in diameter and from 25 mm to 200 mm in length. The nails can be plain, threaded or ringed. Each pallet manufacturer, depending on the product it makes, uses a specific type of nail.

In recent years, and since 2015, Coinalde has been carrying out a process of improving its production equipment to achieve greater productivity and have a more competitive price. In the words of Coinalde’s own manager, Dionisio Merchán, “this was an obsolete company in terms of machinery, and the only way we had for our business to be economically, financially and industrially viable was to be more efficient than our competitors”. Thus, the company is immersed in a process of industry 4.0, with new machines with sensorization, artificial intelligence…

“Now, we have managed to get the machines to work at 95% of their capacity, which means we can manufacture between 1,600 and 2,500 nails per minute, per machine, when before our production was between 400 and 800 per minute on conventional machines,” emphasizes the company’s manager. This improvement has been carried out thanks to the SPRI programs Renove Industria 4.0, Renove Maquinaría 2020, and Gauzatu Internacional, among others, and the collaboration in financing of the Mondragon Corporation and banks.

Coinalde has a plant in Poland, from where it sells in Poland and exports to Italy, central and northern France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. “Nails are a low-cost product, and transportation has a big impact on the final price of the product, so it is crucial to be efficient and have production spread out,” says Dionisio Merchán. From its headquarters in Vitoria, Coinalde sells in Spain and exports to Portugal, central and southern France, North Africa, Canada and Singapore.

As it was classified as a core business, the company’s activity was not greatly affected by the pandemic generated by COVID-19.

Looking to the future, Coinalde wants to continue to increase its efficiency and productivity, to remain a world leader in the manufacture of nails.

Industry 4.0, with the implementation of smart technologies and advanced materials, is one of the priorities of the SPRI Group, which acts as a technological link for Basque companies to access 4.0 solutions, from grants to the support of professionals in the field throughout the process.
