fDi Intelligence magazine, part of the prestigious Financial Times group, has recognized Bilbao among 367 European cities for its economic strengths, business fabric and financial capabilities. According to the latest ranking, Bilbao remains in the top 10 of attractive cities in Europe.
La revista fDi Intelligence, perteneciente al prestigioso grupo Financial Times, ha reconocido a Bilbao entre 367 ciudades europeas por sus fortalezas económicas, su tejido empresarial y sus capacidades financieras. Según el último ranking, Bilbao sigue estando en el top 10 de las ciudades atractivas en Europa.
Bilbao has been recognized as the eighth best medium-sized European city in terms of attracting foreign direct investment by the magazine fDi Intelligence, of the prestigious Financial Times publishing group. The city will receive the award this March at the world’s leading real estate fair, MIPIM, in the French city of Cannes.
In this new edition of the fDi Intelligence ranking, “European Cities and Regions of the Future 2022-2023”, Bilbao has been evaluated, quantitatively and qualitatively, among 367 cities in Europe. In its elaboration, the economic strengths, the business fabric and the financial capacities of multiple cities and regions in Europe are analyzed.
It is important to note that Bilbao is the only medium-sized city in Spain present in the ranking. The latest results of this analysis show that the city is among the main European cities when it comes to generating business opportunities and developing policies and actions to attract and retain investment and talent.
They also endorse the work that the Bilbao City Council has been carrying out in recent years to boost the international projection of the city and generate a favorable context for the promotion of economic activity and the attraction of foreign direct investment. For those in charge of the Consistory “it means continuing to be in the top 10 of attractive cities in Europe.”
On this occasion, first place went to the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, second place to Belfast, capital of Northern Ireland, and the Portuguese city of Porto closed the top three. Medium-sized cities are those with a population of 200,000 to 500,000 inhabitants.
The history of the Financial Times group’s recognition of Bilbao dates back to 2016, when the Villa was a double winner in the “fDi Strategy Awards” in the “Smart City” and “Education Cluster” categories for its commitment to moving towards a smart city model and promoting knowledge-based development.

Bilbao ha sido reconocida como la octava mejor ciudad europea de tamaño medio en atracción de inversión extranjera directa por la revista fDi Intelligence, del prestigioso grupo editorial Financial Times. La ciudad recogerá el galardón este mes de marzo en la Feria Inmobiliaria de referencia mundial, MIPIM, en la ciudad francesa de Cannes.

Como dato importante señalar que Bilbao es la única ciudad de tamaño medio del Estado presente en el ranking. Los últimos resultados de este análisis ponen de manifiesto que la Villa se encuentra entre las principales urbes europeas a la hora de generar oportunidades de negocio y desarrollar políticas y actuaciones de atracción y retenciónde la inversión y el talento.
Asimismo, avalan la labor que viene desarrollando en los últimos años el Ayuntamiento de Bilbao para impulsar la proyección internacionalde la ciudad y generar un contexto favorable para la promoción de la actividad económica y la atracción de inversión directa extranjera. Para los responsables del Consistorio “supone seguir estando en el top 10 de las ciudades atractivas en Europa.”
En esta ocasión, el primer lugar ha correspondido a la capital de Lituania, Vilna, la segunda posición a Belfast, capital de Irlanda del Norte, y eltop-3lo ha cerrado la ciudad portuguesa deOporto.
