Guernica: the Spanish government denies displaying Picasso’s civil war masterpiece at the Guggenheim Museum / el gobierno español se niega exhibir la obra maestra de Picasso en el Museo Guggenheim

Posted on May 16, 2022August 16, 2022 by info

The painting depicting the 1937 bombing of the Basque town, Guernica, has never been displayed in the Basque Country.

A bid proposed by the Basque government to display the work of art in the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao was rejected by the Spanish government. The painting depicts the 1937 bombing of the small town of Guernica, after which it is named, was a response by Picasso to the fascist forces responsible. Picasso painted the anti-war piece in Paris which was later on display in the 1937 Paris International Exposition

The painting is currently housed in the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and has been since 1992. The Spanish government reiterated that it will not be moved even for temporary exhibits due to the size and fragility of the work. Similar proposals to move the painting to the Basque Country were also rejected in 1997 and 2006.

Institutional Declaration: Guernica, living 85 years in our memory

Guernica was devastated in an aerial bombardment that lasted three uninterrupted hours. It was market day. Hundreds of people died and the town was destroyed. It was not the first planned aggression against the civilian population. On March 31 Durango was attacked, on April 24-25 Eibar and the Gogora Institute has documented the bombing of more than 30 municipalities in the Basque Country.

Guernica has gone down in history as a universal symbol of the cruelty of war and the human suffering involved in an indiscriminate attack on a defenseless civilian population. Eighty-five years have passed and we continue to witness, with perplexity and anguish, other “Guernicas” throughout the world, in a dramatic demonstration of the inability to learn from history. In the heart of Europe, Ukraine and its martyred cities suffer the same barbarism that ravaged Guernica.

Today, we once again demand, based on ethical, democratic and human values, an end to the armed aggression that is causing death and suffering to millions of innocent people. We again show our solidarity with the people and legitimate institutions of Ukraine.

After the bombing of Guernica, the Government of Basque Premier Aguirre initiated the evacuation of thousands of children in order to save their lives. The dramatic scenes of those farewells are part of the imaginary and collective memory of our country. Basque boys and girls were welcomed; now it is up to us to be a land of welcome for those fleeing from suffering. We were welcomed, we must welcome.

Guernica was attacked twice. First with the bombs and later with the lies that denied the bombing. Lies that had to be endured throughout 40 years of dictatorship, exile, and suffering.

This Declaration of the Basque Government, made on April 26, 2022, remembers and pays tribute to the victims of the bombing of Guernica and the Basque populations. It recognizes the effort of a people to recover the memory, the dignity and the truth about what happened. It values the journalistic task that made possible that 85 years ago, as today, the world could know the truth of what was happening.

The generations that inherited that memory and those to come, who will continue to build the Basque Country of the future, have the task of not forgetting, so that something similar never happens again.
