Jolas: 350,000 kilograms of recycled plastic used in playgrounds / 350.000 kilos de plástico reciclado utilizado en parques infantiles

Posted on October 21, 2021November 2, 2021 by info

They are pioneers in Spain in manufacturing playgrounds made of 100% recycled and recyclable plastic with product certification UNE-EN 1176:2018 and EN 1176:2017.

The Basque company, Jolas, is committed to the use of environmentally friendly materials in its solutions for playgrounds and street furniture. Since they started this new innovative project in 2017, it has reached the figure of 350,000 kilos of recycled plastic, which has been used in different playgrounds and public spaces in the state. These innovative and sustainable playgrounds have current state and European certification.

The company is committed to the circular economy, giving a new use to products from the yellow container. The playgrounds made of recycled plastic are manufactured with what comes from plastic packaging waste. At the same time, they are recyclable, making them an everlasting product.

The process consists of several phases; once the plastic waste has been collected from the yellow containers by a waste manager, the plastic containers are separated, crushed and converted into small portions of compressed plastic. These are used to generate profiles with different shapes, sizes and thicknesses. These will enable the subsequent design and manufacture of playground equipment, gymnastic circuits or street furniture. “The company that manufactures the profiles has more than 2,000 references, which can be used not only to make playgrounds but also for construction, gardening or industry,” says Iñigo Isasti, the company’s commercial director.

Among the advantages of this material is its durability. In addition to being more environmentally friendly and resistant, it also has a long service life (20-year warranty) and requires little maintenance. “Recycled plastic is a waste converted into a very practical raw material with multiple uses for different sectors. It avoids ending up in landfills or incinerators. Plastic has a very bad reputation these days when we think green, but the problem is not the plastic, but the bad or poor management of the plastic waste that is generated,” adds Isasti.

A playground made of recycled plastic can use from 300 to 1300 kilos of this material, depending on its dimensions. They have carried out several projects of urban furniture and playgrounds in different parts of the state. For example, a 2500 m fence in Galicia in which they have used 44,000 kilos.

Their idea is to grow abroad and they already have several orders in Portugal and France. They look optimistically to the future and see many opportunities for this material in other sectors. “Our philosophy is aligned with the ideas of advancing in the circular economy of the administrations and we see a growing interest in this matter” concludes Isasti.
