Three generations of Basque-Australians reunited in Trebonne, Queensland (Australia) in the inauguration of the fronton.

Posted on February 1, 2023January 30, 2023 by Irati

The Basque House (Euskal Etxea) of North-Queensland and the Basque people of Trebonne reunited in a beautiful and moving act for the inauguration of the renewed fronton of pelota.

The history of the fronton goes back to the era of the migration, and was inaugurated for the first time on the 28th of November of 1959, 63 years ago, promoted by the Basque people that worked in the sugar cane industry.

Felix and José Maria Jayo won the first game against Juan Cruz Arriaga and Tomas Monasterio. The fronton has been protected since the 27th of July of 2001 when the State of Queensland declared it heritage.

This time, maintenance work has been done to the fronton and the figures of four players have been painted in the place. This initiative has been promoted by the government of the region, the Basque communities and the art department of Queensland’s government. Moreover, the mayor of Hinchinbrook — electoral district that is part of Queensland’s state and to which Trebonne and Ingham belong to — is Ramon Jayo, son of one of the players painted in the fronton, Felix Jayo who is originally from Aulesti, a small town in the Lea Artibai district of the Basque Country.

Hiru belaunaldi euskal-australiar batu dira Trebonnen (Queensland, Australia) frontoiaren inaugurazioarako

North Queensland-eko Euskal Etxeko (North Queenland Basque Club, NQBC) eta Trebonne aldeko euskaldunek bat egin zuten, elkarretaratze xinple bezain polit eta hunkigarri batean, Trebonneko euskal pilotalekuaren zaharberritze eta edertze lanen inaugurazioan.

Ekitaldiak hiru belaunaldiko ehunda hamar bat euskal-argentinar bildu zituen joan den azaroaren 26an, bai Trebonnekoak eta ondoko Ingham eta eskualdekoak, eta baita hegoekialderago Townsville hiri aldetik eta Ayr-etik etorritakoak ere.

Trebonneko euskal frontoia immigrazioaren garaiari lotuta dago eta Trebonne Hotelaren lurretan inauguratu zuten hain zuzen ere duela 63 urte, 1959ko azaroaren 28an, orduan azukre-kainabera mozten lanean zebiltzaten euskal emigranteek bultzatuta. Lehenengo partida Felix eta Jose Maria Jayok, Juan Cruz Arriaga eta Tomas Monasterioren kontra jokatu zuten, lehenengo bikotea irabazle. Frontoia babestuta dago 2001eko uztailaren 27tik, Queenland estatuko ondare gisa aitortua.

Oraingoan, mantenimendu lanak egin dizkiote pilotalekuari eta lau pilotariren figura margotuak gehitu, tokiko gobernuak, euskal komunitateak eta Queensland-eko Gobernuko Arte Sailak bultzatu duten ekimen batean. Suertatzen da, aldi berean, Hinchinbrook-eko alkatea —2.807 metro koadro dituen eremua da Hinchinbrook Shire eta bertan kokatzen dira Trebonne eta Ingham— Ramon Jayo dela, aulestiar jatorrikoa, eta frontoia pilotan estreinatu zuen Felix Jayoren semea.
