TECNALIA Collaborates with 2,000 Companies, Delivering Over 4,200 Technological Solutions by 2022

TECNALIA, a leading research and technological development center, achieved a turnover of 128 million euros in 2022, marking a 6.7% increase from the previous year. With a focus on transferring R&D&I to companies, TECNALIA has collaborated with over 9,500 companies, including 73% SMEs, generating a GDP impact of 678 million euros in the Basque Country. TECNALIA plans to invest 13 million euros in new developments, equipment, and infrastructure, with an 11.2% increase in overall investment. Key technological commitments for 2023 include quantum computing, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, sustainable mobility, and hydrogen, with decarbonization as a cross-cutting theme. The center’s strong collaboration with industry is reflected in the development of over 4,200 technological solutions with 2,000 companies.

President Alex Belaustegui emphasized TECNALIA’s role as a tool for companies and society, acknowledging the resilience, adaptability, and innovative attitude demonstrated by businesses and the center in facing the challenges of the evolving landscape.

Employment, wealth and value for the environment

TECNALIA’s team of 1,500 experts achieved a 2.5% growth in 2022, developing 4,235 R&D&I technological solutions, a 1.4% increase from 2021. With 35 strategic alliances worldwide, the network has expanded by 40% compared to the previous year. TECNALIA’s investee companies contributed to a 29% increase in direct jobs generated, positioning the center as a major creator of quality employment. Notably, each job at TECNALIA supports an average of 6.88 jobs in the Basque Country, totaling 9,706 jobs on average. In terms of Intellectual Property Sales, the center achieved revenues of 8.1 million euros, a 62% increase from 2021, with 740 patents in its portfolio and participation in 14 New Technology-Based Companies. TECNALIA ranks among the top European technology centers for return on Intellectual Property Sales and has consistently been among the Spanish organizations filing the most European patents. As a leading private state organization, TECNALIA secures contracts, participates, and leads projects in the European Commission’s Horizon Europe program, ranking 15th out of 1,822 European research organizations. In the past two years, TECNALIA has obtained 94 projects, leading 16 of them and collaborating with 118 national companies.

Challenges for 2023

TECNALIA’s second stage of the Strategic Plan aims to boost economic and social impact through technological research and innovation in areas such as smart manufacturing, digital transformation, sustainable mobility, and personalized health. Key focuses include quantum computing, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, hydrogen, and decarbonization. TECNALIA collaborates with industry leaders, operates Europe’s largest floating test laboratory, and actively contributes to precision medicine. The center also runs a business acceleration program for deeptech startups. TECNALIA’s activities align with Sustainable Development Goals, driving transformations and accelerating changes for a sustainable future.

TECNALIA desarrolla más de 4.200 soluciones tecnológicas con 2.000 empresas hasta 2022

TECNALIA, centro líder en investigación y desarrollo tecnológico, alcanzó una facturación de 128 millones de euros en 2022, lo que supone un incremento del 6,7% respecto al año anterior. Con el foco puesto en la transferencia de I+D+i a las empresas, TECNALIA ha colaborado con más de 9.500 empresas, de las que el 73% son pymes, generando un impacto en el PIB de 678 millones de euros en el País Vasco. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto su liderazgo en I+D+i y respaldan su plan estratégico para impulsar el impacto económico y social a través de la investigación y la innovación tecnológica.

TECNALIA tiene previsto invertir 13 millones de euros en nuevos desarrollos, equipamientos e infraestructuras, con un incremento de la inversión global del 11,2%. Entre las principales apuestas tecnológicas para 2023 destacan la computación cuántica, la inteligencia artificial, la fabricación avanzada, la movilidad sostenible y el hidrógeno, con la descarbonización como eje transversal. La fuerte colaboración del centro con la industria se refleja en el desarrollo de más de 4.200 soluciones tecnológicas con 2.000 empresas.

El presidente Alex Belaustegui destacó el papel de TECNALIA como herramienta para las empresas y la sociedad, reconociendo la resiliencia, adaptabilidad y actitud innovadora demostrada por las empresas y el centro para afrontar los retos de la evolución del panorama.

Empleo, riqueza y valor para el medio ambiente

El equipo de 1.500 expertos de TECNALIA logró un crecimiento del 2,5% en 2022, desarrollando 4.235 soluciones tecnológicas de I+D+i, un 1,4% más que en 2021. Con 35 alianzas estratégicas en todo el mundo, la red se ha expandido un 40% respecto al año anterior. Las empresas participadas de TECNALIA contribuyeron a un aumento del 29% en los empleos directos generados, posicionando al centro como un importante creador de empleo de calidad. Cabe destacar que cada puesto de trabajo de TECNALIA sustenta una media de 6,88 empleos en el País Vasco, totalizando 9.706 empleos de media. En cuanto a Ventas de Propiedad Intelectual, el centro alcanzó unos ingresos de 8,1 millones de euros, un 62% más que en 2021, con 740 patentes en cartera y participación en 14 Nuevas Empresas de Base Tecnológica. TECNALIA se sitúa entre los primeros centros tecnológicos europeos por retorno de Ventas de Propiedad Intelectual y se ha mantenido de forma consistente entre las organizaciones españolas que más patentes europeas registran. Como organización privada estatal líder, TECNALIA consigue contratos, participa y lidera proyectos en el programa Horizonte Europa de la Comisión Europea, ocupando el puesto 15 de 1.822 organizaciones de investigación europeas. En los dos últimos años, TECNALIA ha obtenido 94 proyectos, liderando 16 de ellos y colaborando con 118 empresas nacionales.

Retos para 2023

La segunda fase del Plan Estratégico de TECNALIA tiene como objetivo impulsar el impacto económico y social a través de la investigación y la innovación tecnológica en áreas como la fabricación inteligente, la transformación digital, la movilidad sostenible y la salud personalizada. Entre los focos clave se encuentran la computación cuántica, la inteligencia artificial, la fabricación avanzada, el hidrógeno y la descarbonización. TECNALIA colabora con líderes de la industria, gestiona el mayor laboratorio de ensayos flotantes de Europa y contribuye activamente a la medicina de precisión. El centro también dirige un programa de aceleración empresarial para startups de deeptech. Las actividades de TECNALIA se alinean con los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, impulsando transformaciones y acelerando cambios para un futuro sostenible.
