Salva Industrial is one of the ten largest European manufacturers of ovens for bakeries and pastry shops. The company, located in Lezo, sells 70% of its products abroad.

The company was founded in 1943 on the initiative of the brothers Jaime and Juan Llordes, who during the turbulent times of the World War decided to manufacture an oven in San Sebastian to sell it to a baker and in exchange have bread for the whole year. Years later, the company, called Hornos Eléctricos Salva, moved to its current headquarters in Lezo, focusing on the manufacture of ovens for the bakery and pastry industry at a national level.

In the 1970s, it began to internationalise, with the creation of commercial subsidiaries abroad. It entered the markets of France, the Middle East, the United Kingdom and Mexico, until it reached its current 70% internationalisation rate. In the 1980s, it adopted its current name, Salva Industrial.

The company’s clients are supermarkets, hotels and artisan bakeries. “We manufacture ovens and machinery for bakeries and pastry shops. We can assemble a complete bakery”, explains David Llordes, General Manager of a company that is one of the 10 largest oven manufacturers in Europe. “We have no significant competition either in the Basque Country or in Spain”.

The business group is made up of four industrial companies specialising in “ovens and refrigeration in Gipuzkoa and machinery in Barcelona, and we also have a stake in an electronics company”. The workforce totals 160 people and turnover will reach 40 million euros this year, well above the 26 million euros during the economic crisis due to the pandemic.

Third generation of the family

The company has now reached the third generation. “It is a professionally managed family business. It sells in more than 100 countries on five continents and its five main markets are in Spain, France, Australia, Mexico and the Middle East. “We are the company from Gipuzkoa that exports the most to Australia in percentage terms”. And they boast of their roots in the territory, “with corporate social responsibility. We employ 50 people from companies in the third sector, because we understand that this is something that needs to be done”.

Salva is based on its own technology. “All R&D is our own, we have been innovating for 75 years”. In fact, it has a specific department for innovation and development with 15 people. 2.5% of the business is dedicated to R&D.

The challenges, reflected in its strategic plan, are to become a world reference in the bakery and pastry sector “because of the quality of the baking in the ovens. This is something fundamental in our sector, what we call sweet heat”. The company has developed a modular oven, “which is the best-selling oven in the world and has been acquired by 7-star hotels because of its baking quality”.

Another objective is development in the supermarket sector in Europe and “entry into the North American market, which requires certification, which we already have for many of our products, and which is a gigantic market”.
