The WebLearner group and the STEAM strategy

Posted on February 2, 2023January 31, 2023 by Irati

The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) education is based on the development of different competences learning several materials in an integrated form, reformulating science and technology to a more attractive vision for students.

The concept initially was STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and its main objective was to call for the integration of all these subjects of education in order to prepare learners for the technological era that characterizes the 21st century.  Later on, the concept STEAM was introduced and the element of “Art” was introduced to the notion of STEM. This adjustment was considered important because arts and humanities were going to teach learners morals and values. For example, it is known that history shows us knowledge and absence of empathy can be disastrous for society.

WebLeaner is an interdisciplinary research group that is born from the collaboration between two research centers of the University of the Basque Country: The Faculty of Education from the campus of Bilbao and the Engineering School of Vitoria-Gasteiz. One of the main objectives of this group is to deepen the study of Educational Technology as a response to the challenges presented by education in the current and future society. For that they use several programs such as: Classrooms of the Future, Competence, maker Labs, Active Learning Methodologies, STEAM and the MUTAE (the University Master’s Degree in Technology, Learning and Education). Due to these programs they can develop a more solid research, technological and teaching innovation base in the field of Educational Technology.

The STEAM education creates a fusion between teaching and research that is increasingly usual in education centers, thus achieving a new teaching perspective. Moreover, this type of education encourages the student to learn through experience and, also, fosters the students to face new challenges in our society.

It is important to mention that in a neighborhood of Bilbao (Basurto) an initiative to foster STEAM has been developed and a new sociocultural center has been established. In addition, a new idea is beginning to make some noise called STREAM that incorporates the element of “Reading” to the concept in question. The main argument of this is because reading and literacy promotes critical thinking to the learners, which is necessary for creating new knowledge.
