Tolosa to host UNESCO’s International Day of Peace 2022 / Tolosa acogerá la Jornada Internacional de la Paz 2022 de la UNESCO

Posted on August 27, 2022September 4, 2022 by BP

On September 17th in Tolosa (Gipuzkoa), the conference will focus on the role of art in achieving peace, with the participation of six choirs that have lived through times of conflict.

Tolosa will be the international capital of Peace for one day. It is the place chosen by UNESCO to celebrate the XX. International Day of Peace, in collaboration with the Basque government, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, Tolosa Town Council, the TOPIC Museum and the CIT (Tolosa Centre for Initiatives).

The United Nations General Assembly established the International Day of Peace in 1981, which is commemorated every 21 September. In association with this celebration, UNESCO has organised an annual day for the past two decades that brings together education and public awareness-raising initiatives on peace-related issues.

It is a worldwide event, as it changes its venue every year. The Basque Country will be the destination for the twentieth edition. Tolosa, thanks to its relationship with choral culture and puppetry arts, will host the event, which will take place on 17 September, the Saturday before the International Day.

Six choirs and a great march

The XX. International Peace Day will analyse the relationship between art and the culture of peace. The programme for the day, which will be unveiled in full in September, will include three main events.

In the morning, a round table discussion to be held at TOPIC will analyse the relationship between art, youth and peace. In the afternoon, the streets of Tolosa will host a March for Peace, which aims to involve the citizens to demand an end to violence in the world.

Five choirs from different parts of the world, as well as a Basque choir, will perform at different points along the march, which will conclude with a joint performance of the song composed for the occasion by the Basque composer Josu Elberdin.

In the evening, a choral concert at the Leidor cinema will bring the celebration to a close.

Invitations for both the round table and the concert can now be requested free of charge on the web bakea.eus.

A representation of the ‘Dove of Peace’

The entire graphic identity of the event was also based on an artistic work closely linked to peace: the sculpture of the white dove by Néstor Basterretxea, who said that “violence is too profound a contradiction, as it seeks to achieve freedom, which is life, through death”.

Precisely, Jonan Basterretxea, also present at today’s presentation ceremony, has created a puppet for the occasion based on his father’s sculpture, which in turn will lead the cultural march on 17 September.

For a future of coexistence

The celebration of the International Day of Peace in Tolosa is an opportunity to root and strengthen the values of peace in society. This is precisely what all the institutions involved in the organisation of this event have pointed out.

In the words of the councillor Beatriz Artolazabal, “peace must be much more than non-violence. It must be based on ethical and democratic principles and values”. In this sense, she stressed that “in this current geopolitical context, this day makes even more sense, because peace today still requires commitment. And our commitment today rests on two pillars: culture and youth”.

According to Ion Gambra, the “strengthening” of coexistence and democratic culture, based on peace and human rights, requires “an awareness and an active commitment” from the whole of society. “Both in our society and throughout the world, a committed and organised citizenry in this sense is an enormous asset in favour of peace and human rights. The celebration of the International Day of Peace in Toulouse offers us a great opportunity to extend and further entrench these values, to share them with countries all over the world and to celebrate them, moreover, through culture and art”, said the regional director of Human Rights and Democratic Culture.

For her part, the mayoress of Tolosa, Olatz Peon Ormazabal, pointed out that “Tolosa has lived through times of conflict, with different forms of violence, but we have known how to move forward and take steps towards coexistence, based on respect, reflection and dialogue, and through initiatives promoted by the institutions and citizens’ forums; that is why we can say that Tolosa is representative in terms of coexistence and also in the cultural sphere; that is why culture will be our way of vindicating peace. This day will allow us to continue working on coexistence and promoting the culture of peace in defence of human rights, so that we can build the future by learning from our past”.

The co-director of TOPIC, Estitxu Zaldua, also stressed the need to promote art as a driving force to achieve peace: “Art has been, is and will continue to be a nexus of union between cultures, ideologies and opposing thoughts. Historically, there has been no art that has not united, democratised and promoted initiatives that create a culture of peace, common belonging and social union. That is why, on this day in which the cohesion of citizenship is sought, the presence of puppetry is among us on the international day of peace”.
