Fronteras del Conocimiento

XIV edition of the ‘Frontiers of Knowledge’ Awards in Bilbao / XIV edición de los Premios ‘Fronteras del Conocimiento’ en Bilbao

Posted on June 22, 2022August 12, 2022 by info

These awards represent the power of knowledge as “the best compass” to address major global disruptions such as pandemics and environmental degradation.

The 14th edition of the Frontiers of Knowledge Awards ceremony celebrated the power of science and culture to successfully face the great global challenges of today’s world. We are living in an “era of disruption” – in the words of Carlos Torres Vila, President of the BBVA Foundation and BBVA Group – marked by challenges on a planetary scale such as pandemics and environmental degradation. Therefore, “when we face challenges that transcend not only geographical borders, but also the limits of our knowledge, we need to articulate a global and coordinated response based on research, innovation and education,” stressed the President of the BBVA Foundation.

The event, held at the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao, recognized 14 world leaders in scientific research and artistic creation. The Basque economic capital has once again hosted the Frontiers Awards ceremony, after the BBVA Foundation decided in 2019 to make Bilbao the permanent home of its international awards. The ceremony, co-chaired by the president of the BBVA Foundation and the president of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Rosa Menéndez, featured an opening speech by the mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, and a closing speech by the Lehendakari Íñigo Urkullu.

The ceremony was also attended by some thirty members of the international juries of the eight categories of the awards, from some of the leading universities in Europe and North America. The Spanish scientific and cultural creation community was also represented by researchers and academics from some fifty institutions, including the rectors of leading Spanish universities, as well as directors of research centers and museums.

The road to Covid-19 vaccines: a long and arduous obstacle course

The winners in the Biology and Biomedicine category, Katalin Karikó, Drew Weissman and Robert Langer, have vindicated the importance of basic research as a long-term commitment, essential for sowing the seeds of future breakthroughs and therefore for successfully facing the challenges facing humanity, even if the benefits are not immediate.

Science facing the “existential threat” of climate change and biodiversity crisis

“Ice cores are an amazing way to investigate the Earth’s climate and environmental changes, as they record everything in the atmosphere and leave it frozen in time,” explained Lonnie Thompson, a co-winner with Ellen Mosley-Thompson in the Climate Change category, in his speech. Both glaciologists from Ohio State University have been awarded for demonstrating through their studies of glacier melt that the speed of current climate change is unprecedented.

The economy understood as a set of social interactions

The winners in the categories of Economics, Finance and Business Management, and Social Sciences were two of the most relevant scholars of social and economic networks: Matthew Jackson and Mark Granovetter -respectively-, both professors at Stanford University.

The award-winning contributions of both social scientists have independently established a substantial influence between the set of personal and group relationships that individuals, companies and institutions have and their social and economic performance, in areas such as professional career, income level or financial dependence.

Philip Glass announces the premiere of his Symphony No. 15 on Abraham Lincoln

The architecture of the Frontiers of Knowledge Awards places these seven areas of scientific knowledge on an equal footing with Music and Opera, a category in which the winner of this 14th edition was the American composer Philip Glass. In his acceptance speech, Maestro Glass stressed the importance of the award for recognizing “people who are alive and working and writing about the world we live in.”

It was learning to write music when Glass, as he recounted at the ceremony, he realized that some of the skills he used to create were the same as those needed when studying physics or mathematics: “I discovered that almost everything I did could be expressed with music”. The relationship between art and science is, therefore, something natural for the composer, who has united in his work two apparently distant worlds by taking an interest in figures such as Einstein, Galileo, Kepler or Stephen Hawking, personalities “who were very radical in their way of life and changed the world in which they lived.”

About the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards

The BBVA Foundation focuses its activity on promoting scientific research and cultural creation of excellence, as well as the recognition of talent. The Frontiers of Knowledge Awards recognize and encourage, since their creation in 2008, contributions of singular impact in science, art and humanities, especially those that significantly expand the scope of what is known, make new fields emerge or are the result of the interaction between different disciplinary areas.

The aim of the awards is to celebrate and promote the value of knowledge as a public good without borders and the best tool to face the great challenges of our time. Its eight categories reflect the map of knowledge in the second half of the 20th century and today, giving differential weight to areas of special development and significance in recent decades such as the environment, information and communication technologies and biomedicine, together with areas such as basic sciences, economics, social sciences, humanities and, in the field of artistic creation, music and contemporary opera.

The international juries of the Frontiers Awards are composed of recognized experts in their respective fields and act with complete independence, applying the indicators and metrics of excellence specific to each area. Nominations come from numerous academic, research and artistic institutions, among them the most prominent on a global scale.

Twenty Frontiers Laureates subsequently awarded Nobel Prizes

An external indicator of the excellence of the Frontiers of Knowledge Awards is that 20 of the researchers recognized by the BBVA Foundation awards subsequently received the Nobel Prize.

Nine Frontiers Laureates have subsequently won the Nobel in Economics: Lars Peter Hansen (2013), Jean Tirole (2014), Angus Deaton (2015), William Nordhaus (2018), Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo (2019), Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson (2020) and David Card (2021).

In the case of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, four Frontiers laureates have subsequently won the award from the Swedish Academy: Shinya Yamanaka (2011), James P. Allison (2018), and David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian (2021).

In the case of the Nobel Prize in Physics, four Frontiers Laureates have subsequently received the award from the Swedish Academy: Didier Queloz and Michel G. E. Mayor (2019), and Klaus Hasselman and Syukuru Manabe (2021).

Finally, in the case of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, three Frontiers Laureates have subsequently received the award from the Swedish Academy: Robert J. Lefkowitz (2012), and Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna (2020).
