Precisely the work of the Basque geriatrician has been key in improving this care, which is why the Ashoka Foundation emphasizes that the medical professional “is revolutionizing the world of care, humanizing the care of people, guaranteeing respect for their dignity and improving their physical and mental health. We believe that this award will help Ana to multiply the impact of her work,” the foundation adds.
Along these lines, the Dignified Care Foundation promotes the ‘Libera-Care Standard’, a standard that has been the first to measure the quality of life in geriatric centers. This is a model of social and health care created around the dependent person and in which their autonomy, their needs, friendly and humane care and alternatives to restraints are its main axes.
Currently, more than 137 centers in Spain have been certified in the Libera-Care Standard, with 30,000 dependent persons cared for under this standard and 20,000 professionals who have changed their way of caring towards this person-centered model without restraints. The Libera-Care Standard is being implemented in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. More than 412 organizations in Spain have already adhered to the Libera-Care Standard that guarantees this new paradigm of care.
The Ashoka Foundation stresses that each person requires personalized care to improve their physical and mental well-being. “There needs to be a transformation of the centers that involves humanization at all levels and that advocates, with respect, for the dignity of people and the emotional and mental wellbeing of their residents”. Ashoka accompanies the social entrepreneur in training, visibility and strategic advice, offering her connection to the largest network of social entrepreneurs in the world.

La entidad ha distinguido a Urrutia porque “a través de Cuidados Dignos, la fundación que ella preside, está cambiando el paradigma del sistema de atención a personas mayores y dependientes, promoviendo la erradicación del uso de sujeciones físicas y químicas”.
El aumento de la demanda de cuidados profesionales para las personas mayores dependientes a nivel nacional es una realidad. Si bien el modelo de residencias de mayores ha sufrido una evolución en los últimos años, todavía quedan muchas cosas por mejorar. Precisamente la labor de la geriatra vasca ha sido clave en la mejora de esta atención y por ello desde la Fundación Ashoka destaca que la profesional médica “está revolucionando el mundo de los cuidados, humanizando la atención a las personas, garantizando el respeto de su dignidad y mejorando su salud física y mental. Creemos que este premio podrá ayudar a Ana a multiplicar el impacto de su trabajo”, añaden desde la fundación.
En esta línea, la Fundación Cuidados Dignos impulsa la ‘Norma Libera-Care’, normativa que ha sido la primera en lograr medir la calidad de vida en los centros geriátricos. Se trata de un modelo de cuidado sociosanitario creado en torno a la persona dependiente y en el que su autonomía, sus necesidades, una atención amable y humana y las alternativas a las sujeciones son sus ejes principales.
En la actualidad, más de 137 centros del Estado se han certificado en la Norma Libera-Care, con 30.000 personas dependientes cuidadas bajo esa norma y 20.000 profesionales que han cambiado su manera de cuidar hacia este modelo centrado en la persona sin sujeciones. La Norma Libera-Care está siendo implantada en España, Portugal y América Latina. Más de 412 organizaciones en España ya se han adherido a la Norma Libera-Care que garantiza que este nuevo paradigma de cuidados.
Desde la Fundación Ashoka subrayan que cada persona requiere de unos cuidados personalizados que mejoren su bienestar físico y mental. “Es necesario que haya una transformación de los centros que implique la humanización a todos los niveles y que abogue, desde el respeto, por la dignidad de las personas y el bienestar, tanto emocional como mental, de sus residentes”.
