The Basque Health Cluster Eguna (Basque Health Cluster Day) will be held on December 9 at 4:15 p.m. at the Olatua terminal of the port of Getxo (Bizkaia).

The Basque Health Cluster Eguna will be held on December 9, an event that celebrates its first edition and with which the Basque cluster of bioscience and health companies aims to establish an annual reference event for companies and organizations in the sector.
In its first edition, which will take place at the Olatua terminal in Getxo (Bizkaia), Basque Health Cluster will present for the first time the José Miguel Azkoitia Award, in memory of the person who was one of the actors who dedicated the most effort and determination to activate the Bio-Health sector in the Basque Country. With this award, the Cluster aims to distinguish those people or entities that work to promote the sector and/or have had a positive impact on its development.
José Miguel Azkoitia, who passed away in 2018, was an Industrial Engineer from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and PhD from the University of the Basque Country. He was Director of Health Business Development at TECNALIA. His research career was focused on the areas of Biomedical Engineering, Health Technologies, Robotics and ICTs.
In addition to the award ceremony, during the day, the president of the Cluster, Mikel Álvarez, will take a look at “the years of journey and a long road ahead” of the Basque Health Cluster. There will be an online presentation by Karl Schmieder, CEO of messagingLAB, entitled “What’s Your Bio Strategy? Preparing Business for the Next Generation of Biotechnology”. Schmieder, a biochemist by training and award-winning writer, is founder of a strategy consulting firm specializing in the challenges facing biotech startups. He is an active member of Brooklyn’s growing synthetic biology community. This will be followed by a dialogue on synthetic biology featuring, in addition to Karl Schimieder, Juanjo Rubio, Director of the Social Innovation Unit of Navarra and María Pascual de Zulueta, Director of Basque Health Cluster.
The biosciences and health sector in the Basque Autonomous Community is made up of more than 150 companies, 90% of which are SMEs, employing more than 8,085 people and representing 1.9% of the GDP in the Basque Country. With a total turnover of more than 1,668 million euros in 2020, R&D expenditure in that year was more than 140 million euros.
The biosciences sector has a growing business presence in the Basque Country, and has a great opportunity for growth in a market that will grow internationally.
El próximo 9 de diciembre se celebrará el Basque Health Cluster Eguna, una cita que celebra su primera edición y con la que el clúster vasco de empresas de biociencias y salud pretende establecer una cita de referencia anual para las empresas y organizaciones del sector.
En su primera edición, que tendrá lugar en la terminal Olatua de Getxo (Bizkaia), Basque Health Clusterentregará por primera vez el Premio José Miguel Azkoitia, en recuerdo de quien fuera uno de los actores que dedicaran más empeño y esfuerzos a activar el sector Bio-Salud en Euskadi. Con este premio, el Clúster pretende distinguir a aquellas personas o entidades que trabajan para impulsar el sector y/o han impactado positivamente en su desarrollo.
José Miguel Azkoitia, fallecido en 2018, era Ingeniero Industrial por la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña y Doctor por la Universidad del País Vasco. Fue Director de Desarrollo de Negocio de Salud de TECNALIA. Su carrera investigadora estuvo centrada en las áreas de Ingeniería Biomédica, Tecnologías para la Salud, Robótica y TICs.
Además de la entrega del Premio, durante la jornada, el presidente del Clúster, Mikel Álvarez, realizará un recorrido por “los años de viaje y mucho camino por delante” del Basque Health Cluster. Tendrá lugar una ponencia online de Karl Schmieder, CEO de messagingLAB, titulada “What’s Your Bio Strategy? Preparando negocio para la próxima generación de biotecnología”. Schmieder, bioquímico de formación y escritor galardonado, es fundador de una firma de consultoría estratégica especializada en los retos que enfrentan las nuevas empresas biotecnológicas. Es un miembro activo de la creciente comunidad de biología sintética de Brooklyn. A continuación, se celebrará un diálogo sobre biología sintética en el que participarán, además de Karl Schimieder, Juanjo Rubio, Director de la Unidad de Innovación Social de Navarra y María Pascual de Zulueta,Directora de Basque Health Cluster.
El sector de biociencias y salud en la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca está integrado por más de 150 empresas, de las cuales el 90% son PYMEs, que dan empleo a más de 8.085 personas y representan el 1’9% del PIB en Euskadi. Con más de 1.668 millones de euros de facturación total en 2020, el gasto en I+D en el citado ejercicio fue superior a los 140 millones de euros.
El sector de las biociencias tiene cada vez mayor presencia empresarial en Euskadi, y tiene ante sí una gran oportunidad de crecimiento en un mercado que va a crecer internacionalmente.
