Posted on September 30, 2021September 28, 2021 by info

The Basque company Dibulitoon Studio, since 1991 has been dedicated to audiovisual production specializing in animation, collaborating in the beginning with other studios in the United States and the United Kingdom and, since 2000, began to make its own animated films.

Among his best-known creations are ‘Elcano. The first trip around the world’, ‘The longest trip’ or ‘Yoko’, among others. During the years, the way of doing animation changed substantially thanks to the new features of computers; they moved from manual drawing to computer drawing.

During this time, computers have been increasing and improving their processing capacity and graphics processing, which has allowed Dibulitoon to open a new axis of services for companies focused on the realization of presentations and 3D simulations in which virtual reality also has a place.

“An example of our new proposal linked to the industry was the production of a video on a European project in which the client had to show all the progress made in that project in two years of work. It was a modular electric battery project for vehicles and it was necessary to detail how the battery was placed depending on the vehicle in which it was going to be installed. The best way to explain it clearly is through an animation so that it was perfectly understood, because it was difficult to understand how this modular battery worked because it depended on how you put it, it could be used for one thing or another”, emphasizes Ricardo Ramón, CEO and founder of Dibulitoon Studio.

Among the utilities of this type of 3D or virtual reality animations, one of the most common is to show them at fairs and events where it is impossible to bring real pieces due to their size or cost, such as a propeller or a windmill blade:

“Some people may think that the best thing to do would be to take a photograph of the piece and exhibit it, but it is not the same as a 3D animation, since the latter is better illuminated, clearer and you can rotate the image to see it from any angle,” explains Ricardo Ramón. In addition, these animations allow you not only to see the piece itself, but also to observe how it works. “With 3D animation you can see what is impossible. Imagine that the shaft in operation goes very fast in the real image, we would not see anything. Thanks to the animation we can slow down the speed, get inside, make a section, and so on,” the CEO explains.

In terms of augmented reality or immersive virtual reality projects, Dibulitoon has developed interesting initiatives in recent years. Together with Tecnalia, they worked on an augmented reality project that made it possible to show the characters of a children’s book through animations. In terms of virtual reality, they have recreated the ship La Victoria, in which Elcano sailed around the world, in order to take a virtual tour inside the ship, as well as recreating different scenarios that appear in the film ‘Elcano. The first trip around the world’. This project gave them the idea of using this technology to simulate the interior of factories and manufacturing environments for virtual tours, as Ricardo Ramón explains: “As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, visits to production plants have been reduced and thanks to solutions like this it is possible to carry out virtual tours and resume contact with customers. We can do this by recreating the factory in real image or filming it with stereoscopic 3D cameras,” recalls the founder of Dibulitoon.

In Ramón’s opinion, “animation tells you something through plans. Do you want to know how a machine works? Let’s start from the general shot, from the outside, let’s see what the part looks like, let’s go to one part, let’s see how that part works and then I’ll take you to another part. That would be like telling a movie. Virtual reality is different. I’m in there. It can also be inside the machine or in a factory. It’s like taking a factory tour where you’re there, you see everything that’s going on and elements appear that provide information. You are seeing a machine, a milling machine working in that workshop, but at the same time a screen appears showing you complementary information that can be graphics, data, text, audio, video, etc.”

Other useful areas of the new industry-focused services offered by Dibulitoon are those related to staff training, as Jone Landaluze, Production Manager, explains: “If this technology is applied to a manufacturing process instead of plant visits, you can train these people. Not to mention the maintenance people, or the remote technical assistance service people to whom you, from the location where you have installed your product, can transmit what is happening there. We could also talk about occupational safety training simply to know what environment you are going to find in order to prepare the protective elements, etc.”

Dibulitoon’s new service proposal for companies is based on its experience in the production of animated films over the last 30 years, as well as on a large team of workers and collaborators that reaches a hundred people. “We are used to telling stories through animation and we know how to do it. We have scriptwriters, animators, illustrators, sound technicians and all the personnel needed to tell stories,” emphasizes Jone Landaluze.
