Autobús de hidrógeno de Bizkaibus

Biscay’s public bus service carries out traffic and refuelling tests with a hydrogen-powered bus

Posted on August 9, 2022August 10, 2022 by BP

Bizkaibus (the public bus passenger transport service in the province of Biscay, BasqueLand) began testing the operation and refuelling of a hydrogen-powered bus in June.

Moving towards zero-emission public transport is one of the strategic objectives of the Regional Department of Transport and Sustainable Mobility of Biscay for this term of office. With this objective in mind, Bizkaibus is starting the first real circulation and refuelling test with a hydrogen-powered bus.

The vehicle is the Urbino 12 Hydrogen model on loan from Solaris, a leading European bus company belonging to the Basque business group CAF. It is 12 metres long, has a capacity for 90 passengers, is zero emissions, as it only emits water vapour into the atmosphere, is silent and is as confortable as the rest of the buses that make up the Bizkaibus fleet.

With a power of 340 hp, the bus is equipped with a 70 hp hydrogen fuel cell. During the test period, it will travel the same route as the “parent” bus, with journeys of around 200 kilometres a day. It will run without passengers, but will be weighted with some 3,500 kg of additional cargo.

Refuelling tests will also be carried out with a portable hydrogenerator installed by the company Carburos Metálicos in the Bizkaibus depot. The charging times and autonomy of the Solaris Urbino 12 Hydrogen model are similar to those of a conventional bus, around 8 minutes for a full refuelling, and it is capable of covering long distances on a single charge.

During the presentation ceremony, the Deputy for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Miguel Ángel Gómez Viar, highlighted the maturity and potential of hydrogen technology in the process of decarbonising interurban road transport. It is a technology that is giving very good results, so it is a good option to test to see how it adapts to the characteristics of the Bizkaibus service and to continue advancing in the process of incorporating buses that are increasingly free of polluting emissions into public passenger transport by road in Bizkaia.

Sustainable Fleet

In this regard, the Transport Minister reminded that Bizkaibus already has one of the most sustainable fleets in Spain and that in 2022 it is going to undertake one of the largest fleet renewals in its history with the aim of achieving a more sustainable and environmentally friendly public transport.

A total of 35 hybrids and 6 electric vehicles are expected to be added this year, the largest investment to date. Added to those already in service, this means that by the end of the year, Bizkaibus will have 76 hybrid and 6 electric buses, almost a quarter of its fleet, 24.4%.

Story from: https://web.bizkaia.eus
