At the end of May, the lehendakari made a two-day visit to the Mediterranean island.

The governments of the Basque Country and Corsica have reaffirmed their desire to continue on the path of collaboration. The Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu and the President Gilles Simeoni appeared after the working meeting they both held at the headquarters of the Executive Council, the first event on the programme of the official visit to Corsica.

Speaking to the media, the Lehendakari thanked the Basque delegation for their welcome and highlighted the close relations that the two nations have maintained for many years. In this respect, he referred to the Memorandum of Understanding which the governments of the Basque Country and Corsica signed in April last year to promote joint projects and initiatives in the fields of education, culture, language policy, the diaspora and relations and shared projects within the framework of the European Union.

The programme of the Basque delegation’s trip was developed in three areas: institutional, economic-business and cultural. Thus, during the two-day visit, the Lehendakari held a meeting in the Corsican Assembly with a broad representation of institutions and civil society, to whom he explained the general lines of Basque self-government and the Economic Agreement. Iñigo Urkullu also held a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry with economic agents interested in learning about and maintaining economic and commercial relations with the Basque productive fabric, and visited the Myrte Project facilities for renewable energies.

The programme also included meetings with officials from the University of Corsica and a visit to the Savagmju language immersion centre, in which questions relating to the Corsican language and the Basque linguistic model will be dealt with, given the interest shown by the Corsican educational authorities.

“Corsica and the Basque Country have demonstrated throughout history our ability to face the challenges of the future while maintaining our historical and cultural roots. We are two nations that aspire to respond to the needs and demands of our citizens in a spirit of collaboration. Our shared objective is to advance in a project for the integration of Europe that is based on the diversity of the peoples that make it up”- said the Lehendakari.

Visit to Savaghju-Vivariu language immersion centre

Lehendakari Urkullu began the second and last day of the official trip to Corsica with a visit to the Savaghju-Vivariu language immersion centre, located in the mountains and just 30 minutes from the town of Corti. Accompanied by the President of the Executive Council of Corsica, Giles Simeoni, the Secretary General for External Action, Marian Elorza, and the Director of European Affairs, Mikel Antón, the Lehendakari was able to learn about the details of the programme from the centre’s professionals.

In joint statements following the visit, the Lehendakari stressed the need to invest in minority languages in order to achieve effective respect for the linguistic rights of all people. The Lehendakari stressed that Corsica and the Basque Country share a respect for linguistic diversity and understand linguistic plurality as a great asset. The Lehendakari also announced that the Basque Government and the Corsican Collectivity are already working on drawing up a “Protocol for the exchange of experiences and information” in relation to the process of linguistic normalisation. As the Lehendakari explained, there are four areas of work: legislation, the process of revitalising the language, education and the experience of linguistic models, and public and private commitment.

For his part, President Gilles Simeoni affirmed that achieving the co-officialisation of Corsican is a central objective for his government. President Simeoni explained that they will continue to work so that the institutions support the public policies which are indispensable to protect the language. “This is a very important challenge for all societies and in particular for a small village like ours”.
