Tapia Visit

Multinationals visited by Tapia in Germany reaffirm their commitment to the Basque Country, highlighting its innovative ecosystem and industrial technological capabilities / Alemania reafirma su apuesta por Euskadi

Posted on July 11, 2022July 11, 2022 by BP

The Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque Government, Arantxa Tapia, concluded last Friday the business mission she held in Germany.

Tapia met and visited the managers of the main multinationals that have production plants in the Basque Country; she met leading centers in digitization, hydrogen and robotics and participated in a networking meeting with about thirty Basque professionals living in Bavaria. Germany is a key strategic partner for both the present and the future of the Basque Country.

Visit to German multinationals

The Minister had the opportunity to meet and visit the main executives of the main multinationals that have production plants in the Basque Country. Specifically, she had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the TRUMPF Group (Ditzingen), SIEMENS ENERGY and BAYER (Berlin), besides the meeting held at the headquarters of GRUPO MERCEDES (Stuttgart), on this occasion, with the presence of the Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu.

All the representatives of the multinationals visited conveyed their interest in maintaining the current business ties with their corresponding Basque partners, i.e. Trumpf with Lantek in Araba, Siemens Energy with respect to Siemens Gamesa based in Zamudio, Bayer with its commitment to Viralgen in Donostia / San Sebastian, and a strengthened commitment by the Mercedes Benz Group in the Mercedes Benz production plant in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The four companies, which are dedicated to sectors of special reference in the Basque Country such as machine tools, energy, automotive and biosciences, reaffirmed their commitment to the Basque Country, highlighting its innovative ecosystem and technological and industrial capabilities.

Hydrogen, digitalization and robotics

The Minister, accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Industry, Mikel Amundarain and the CEO of Basque Trade and Investment of the SPRI Group, Ainhoa Ondarzabal, had the opportunity to visit the DLR Lampoldshausen Institute – Institute for Space Propulsion and advanced research center in hydrogen production-, as well as the company FESTO, an independent family business with almost 100 years of history. FESTO is a world-leading manufacturer of automation technology and technical training for intelligent production through the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning. FESTO has an Applications Center (Festo Experience Center) in the AIC, Boroa, and maintains lines of collaboration with leading Basque companies.

The week started on Monday in Munich with a day focused on the Basque talent living in Bavaria. The Basque delegation visited the Technical University of Munich (TUM) to get to know the Chair of Construction and Robotics (BR2) in which Kepa Iturralde from San Sebastian, PhD, is a senior research associate.

Talent

Afterwards, the representatives of the Basque Government participated in a networking meeting with about thirty Basque professionals living in Bavaria, including engineers from Airbus, BMW, Maier, Orona, Fagor Ederlan, Arteche, Amazon, Schaeffler, among other companies, as well as professionals from the education and health sectors.

Germany’s economic context and its relationship with the Basque Country

The trip of the Minister Arantxa Tapia to Germany took place at a time of special uncertainty and concern in Germany where this week the German Federal Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, addressed the country warning of the need to establish measures to cope with the energy constraints in which Germany may find itself this coming winter. The invasion of Ukraine, energy security and inflation have generated worrying uncertainty among political and business leaders.

Germany is one of the driving countries of the European economy and with one of the strongest links with Euskadi, as well as being one of the priority geographies in the Basque Government’s internationalization strategy for 2021-2024. For this reason, Minister Tapia pointed out that in the Basque Country we are going to have to be very attentive to the course of the economy and industrial activity, given that its impact on the Basque economy will be inevitable.

In spite of being in an international context plagued with uncertainty, the fact is that the large German companies consulted maintain growth forecasts and maintain their commitment to production plants in the Basque Country.
