Based on an innovative technology with data engineering and machine learning, Up!Euskadi provides valuable information of value, providing visibility to startups and all the agents of the Ecosystem. The Basque Country is thus presented to the world as an important hub for advanced entrepreneurship.

La nueva plataforma Up!Euskadi facilita ahora:

Startups, investors or ecosystem players, can add and modify the details they consider appropriate about their organization and enhance their profile, providing open access to data for the entire community.

The platform is a key source of intelligence, which will enable the development and evaluation of policies and support initiatives, favoring data-driven decision making, knowledge sharing across sectors and fostering the necessary connections to contribute to the development of startups. This tool has been developed with the collaboration of Dealroom, a leading provider in Data Intelligence linked to technology ecosystems in Europe and the world. From its headquarters in Amsterdam, this firm offers a global vision of the ecosystem, its evolution and the real impact of the policies implemented by the Basque institutions.

The new Up!Euskadi platform now facilitates:

  • Detailed data on the start-ups based in the Basque Country.
  • Segmentation by territories, sectors, technologies, business models,…
  • References of Agents and Investors operating in the Basque Country and the impact of their initiatives.
  • Overview of the latest investment rounds developed in the ecosystem.

This new platform, integrated in the Up!Euskadi portal, offers multiple benefits for Basque startups, companies and investors, among others:

For start-upsFor businesses/investorsFor ecosystem agents
– Visibility to potential customers and investors – Ease of finding alliances to cooperate

– Identification of investors to scale projects – Sharing and attracting talent to improve and grow
– Knowledge of start-ups and on-demand solutions

– Direct and agile access to Innovation and Technology

– Efficient identification of investment opportunities
– Functions of the platform as a work tool

-Positioning of the activity in the ecosystem

It also includes direct access to news, interviews and reports that the SPRI Group publishes daily in relation to the entrepreneurial field. Up!Euskadi is a living, evolving platform that will grow and become more useful as the ecosystem and the circumstances and needs of the start-ups, companies and entities that comprise it grow.

The Basque Country, above the European average in Entrepreneurial Activity

The Basque entrepreneurship ecosystem is strong and growing in a sustainable way. Recently and on the occasion of the celebration of World Entrepreneurship Day, the Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment, has shared updated data prepared by ‘The National Entrepreneurship Context Index’, highlighting that the creation of new companies in the Basque Country is now ahead of countries like Germany and following the statistical steps of the Netherlands, Israel or the United States.

Arantxa Tapia points out that the Basque Country is above the European average in terms of entrepreneurial activity; currently, in the territories of Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa alone, there are more than 58,000 active companies; to find similar figures it is necessary to go back to 2007, a year before the previous global financial crisis.

“Industrial Manufacturing, Energy and Health are our three main areas of specialization”, adds the Minister, who also values the efforts of the people who are entrepreneurs in the Basque Country “convinced and willing to give the best of themselves” in the search for “innovative solutions for the generation of economy and employment.”

COP26 Tapia

Up!Euskadi already brings together nearly 1,000 start-ups that generate employment for more than 6,000 people and a turnover of more than 350M€; undoubtedly, these are data that support the important boost of the Basque Entrepreneurship Ecosystem and its contribution to the country’s economy.

73% of start-ups in the Basque Country have a clear ‘B2B’ focus and most of them -two out of three- are aligned with the Smart Specialization -RIS3-, the European commitment to economic transformation and differentiation of our territory driven through innovation.

The Basque Country, an important Hub for Technological Entrepreneurship

Basque institutions have different instruments to promote their important entrepreneurial ecosystem.

A very important pillar is the work carried out by the network of BICS (Business Innovation Centers), a joint support initiative between the Basque Government and Provincial Councils in Araba, Bizkaia, Bizkaia-Ezkerraldea and Gipuzkoa, which mobilize and accompany innovative ideas until they become viable projects that generate wealth and prosperity; they are essential to boost the activity of our start-ups and entrepreneurial talent in each of our historical territories.

And on the other hand, the new Up!Euskadi platform, recently improved thanks to Artificial Intelligence, gathers all the updated information on the fast-paced activity of the Basque Entrepreneurship Ecosystem, both in terms of start-ups and other agents that make it up, making visible the activity of investors, incubators, private accelerators and, of course, the BICs, according to Leyre Madariaga, director of Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation.

“With more than 900 technology-based and/or innovative companies, coupled with a powerful public-private support system, the Basque Country is undoubtedly becoming an important international Technology Entrepreneurship Hub.”
