Walter Pack, at the forefront of innovation and sustainable mobility in the automotive industry / Walter Pack, a la vanguardia de la innovación y la movilidad sostenible en el sector de la automoción

Posted on July 28, 2022July 21, 2022 by BP

Walter Pack, is the international reference company in the production of functional decorative parts for the automotive and household appliance sectors.

The climate and environmental crisis has brought about fundamental changes in the industry; a transformation that is easily observed in the automotive sector, as it is undergoing a major transition towards the production of zero-emission vehicles and the complete replacement of combustion vehicles.

This change of mentality has generated in a few years great challenges to which the sector must respond. Issues such as the use of green energy to power vehicles, decarbonisation of factories and offices, implementation of reuse and recycling practices at the end of the life of products, and application of circularity in the design, development and delivery of products to reduce the carbon footprint, among others.

In this sense, Walter Pack has made a decisive commitment to making the sector an innovative and sustainable environment, as well as functional and design-oriented, with its participation in various projects related to these issues. The company based in Igorre (Bizkaia) has been working since 1992 in the production of functional decorative parts for the automotive sector and is currently an international benchmark in this area, with several production plants in countries such as Mexico and India.

One of these, which has recently joined, is led by Renault Spain, which aims to set up an industrial ecosystem specialising in the manufacture of connected electric vehicles, and thus make Spain a leader in sustainable mobility.

The initiative responds to the call for a PERTE (Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation) aimed at the Electric and Connected Vehicle in which around fifty leading organisations from the automotive sector and from all areas of the industrial ecosystem in dozens of autonomous communities are participating. Among them is Grupo Antolin, one of the largest manufacturers of automotive components in the world and a global supplier of technological solutions for vehicle interiors, which will work side by side with the Bizkaia-based company.

By combining their knowledge and experience in the manufacture of technological components and high added-value plastic parts, the two firms will develop an HMI (Human Machine Interface, a panel that allows a user to communicate with a machine, software or system) solution that will provide new features to the electric vehicle and improve the comfort of its interior. “This development is based on displays that allow a cost-competitive design without sacrificing performance, through the use of decorative technologies (HMI) combined with the integration of additional functionalities and control electronics for the entire system,” says Iñigo Erhardt, head of R&D at Walter Pack.

TREASURE is another of the projects in which the Basque company is participating, an initiative that began in June 2021 within the framework of the Horizon 2020 programme and which seeks to offer new opportunities to test innovative technologies that make the automotive sector more circular.

With the participation of 15 entities from all over Europe, the aim is to create a platform that helps the end user to know the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and the recyclability of their product by means of a simulation. The platform then explains how to disassemble the components and, finally, they are reused to create a demonstrator. It is precisely in the development of this demonstrator that Walter Pack will make its contribution, integrating electronic functions into the part, as an alternative to other components for analysis and comparison.

The Bizkaia-based company has also participated in the design and technology of the interior of Audi’s first electric car, the e-tron. It has been in charge of producing the dashboard moulding of this model, one of the most iconic aesthetic components of the interior of this vehicle.
