Alerion: “We want to have a relevant position on an international level” / “Queremos tener una posición más relevante a nivel internacional”

Posted on November 10, 2021November 5, 2021 by info

The company from San Sebastian was awarded two prizes at the last South Summit and has just announced an agreement with the Entrepreneurs Fund of the Repsol Foundation.

Alerion finds itself in a moment of glory. The startup from San Sebastian is dedicated to the use of autonomous drones to create high-precision digital duplicates of infrastructures and for automated damage assessment analysis through inspections in solar power plants, wind turbines and refineries. A few weeks ago, it was recognized at the South Summit with two awards: one for the ‘Most Sustainable’ project as well as the ‘Energy & Sustainability’ vertical, two awards that give them visibility and give them the “opportunity to start conversations, especially with investors, when we open our next round of funding,” says Oier Peñagaricano, CEO of Alerion.

In addition, it has just announced an agreement to be accelerated by the Entrepreneurs Fund of the Repsol Foundation. For the time being, the objective of this collaboration, within the framework of the Repsol Corporate Venturing Robotics Hub, will be “to implement our technology in various use cases,” as Peñagaricano explains, an agreement that will allow them to offer their solutions to the petrochemical sector, “where there is a lot of demand and where we see a future, both for refineries and for offshore maritime structures”.

One of the elements that adds value to the services offered by Alerion is the development of a high-precision autonomous navigation technology for drones based on artificial intelligence tools. “The drone is able to find the structure to be analyzed, it approaches it at a distance of 1-5 meters and captures data and images about the state of the infrastructure. Our drones capture data, and then they are equipped with neural networks inside the drone to detect damage. It then travels over the structure at a very short distance, which allows it to obtain high quality and very high definition data, and it analyzes them,” Peñagaricano explains.

Today, drone technology still has many challenges to overcome. One of them is the autonomy of flight and the battery life. Another challenge deals with sensory technology, for example, thermic cameras, ultrasound technology, etc.. There is a lot of sensory technology being developed and the challenge faced in terms of drones is making these technological apparatuses weigh less.

Apart from the aforementioned recognitions and agreements, the last few months have been very busy for this company from San Sebastian, which employs 23 professionals covering multidisciplinary aspects such as data analytics, artificial intelligence or artificial vision. They have just finished a European project financed by the SME Instrument with the aim of developing a drone for inspections in offshore wind farms. Likewise, during the pandemic they have achieved projects in countries such as Mexico, Chile or Ukraine thanks to the Basque Internationalization Agency, Basque Trade & Investment, the public company of the Basque Government.

The San Sebastian startup is also currently involved in a project financed by the European Development Fund (ERDF) through the Hazitek Program of the Basque Government aimed at the floating offshore wind turbine sector in which they are leading the robotics part, both aerial and underwater.

Looking to the future, Alerion’s challenges are to “grow and carry out international projects.” “We want to have a more relevant position at international level. All this without forgetting to continue developing technology to offer increasingly advanced solutions, both in terms of drones and data analytics,” stresses Oier Peñagaricano.
