CAF obtains the contract for the supply of regional units to the Swedish operator SJ AB / Caf se adjudica el contrato para el suministro de unidades regionales al operador sueco SJ AB

Posted on July 8, 2022July 8, 2022 by BP

The Swedish state-owned operator SJ AB has chosen CAF as the supplier of 25 regional units, which could increase to 60 units in the event that the extension options contemplated in the contract are exercised. The volume of the basic agreement closed for the 25 units mentioned above amounts to a figure of around 300 million euros, with the first trains scheduled to enter service in 2026.

They are units of the CAF Civity Nordic platform, intended for regional and interregional service and prepared to cope with the extreme weather conditions in Sweden, with snow and temperatures down to -40ºC. The trainsjs will be composed of 5 cars and will run at speeds of 200 km/h. They will also have ample capacity (3 coupled trains will offer approximately 1,000 available seats), as well as easy access and flexibility for all types of passengers.

SJ Group is a public company with 5,400 employees, which manages most of Sweden’s rail network, connecting Stockholm with the other Scandinavian capitals, Copenhagen and Oslo. With a daily passenger volume of more than 150,000, it is a company characterized by offering a highly efficient and environmentally friendly service. SJ has been named Sweden’s most sustainable brand and the country’s best transport company, as well as Europe’s most digital transport company.

SJ is currently immersed in a plan to modernize its fleet, some of whose units will soon reach the end of their useful life, and to expand the capacity of its trains in view of the expected growth in demand in the coming years. All of this is aimed at achieving a more advanced and comfortable service for its customers and a more sustainable and efficient operation through lower energy consumption and lower maintenance support costs.

CAF’S COMMITMENT TO THE NORDIC MARKET

This new contract confirms CAF’s commitment to the Nordic market. In 2019, the CAF Group acquired the Swedish company EuroMaint, leader in its country in the train maintenance segment and a reference in the Nordic railway market, with a significant market share in the train fleet maintenance business, an activity that it complements with the supply of railway components to operators in the region. This acquisition strengthened CAF’s position in the area in view of the opportunities for new projects in the Scandinavian region, a market where a significant number of tenders are expected to be developed in the coming years.

It should not be forgotten that CAF has developed an important number of projects in the region, among which we can highlight the supply of high speed units for Norway, the manufacture of metro units for Helsinki, as well as the supply of tramway fleets both in Sweden (Stockholm and Lund) and in Norway (Oslo).

In fact, last year the CAF Group was awarded several contracts in Sweden. On the one hand, the manufacture of 20 EMUs (electric units) and 8 BMUs (bimodal biodiesel-electric) for the company AB Transitio, and on the other hand, through EuroMaint, it was awarded two service contracts for the operator SJ AB, covering the maintenance for a period of 12 years of the fleet of trains operating on the Krösatågen and Kustpilen lines, as well as the refurbishment of 57 cars of the fleet of night passenger trains of this Swedish operator.
