The Basque center is the first foundation at a Spanish and Iberoamerican level (the 7th most relevant in the world) and consolidates itself within the top 500 at a global level among all the research institutions, public and private.

CIC energiGUNE, the Basque research center of reference in battery storage, thermal energy solutions, and hydrogen technologies, and member of the Basque Research & Technology Alliance-BRTA, is the most important research foundation in Spain and among all the Iberoamerican countries regardless of scientific field, according to the SCImago ranking, which annually establishes the classification of the main research entities of the world. The data from 2022 reflects, in addition, that the Basque center is the seventh most relevant Foundation of the planet if all the scientific fields are taken into account.
“Year after year we are advancing positions in this ranking, which brings to light the impact and projection of our work”, said Nuria Gisbert, Director-General of CIC enegiGUNE. “In fact, if we limit the classification to the energy and chemistry fields, we are already in the TOP 3 in all the geographical areas within the ranking of centers that are similar to ours”.
The SCImago ranking offers a classification of academic and research-related institutions that is ordered according to a composite indicator. This index combines three different groups of indicators based on research performance, the results of the innovation and the social impact measured by its visibility on the web.
The 2022 report reflects, furthermore, that CIC energiGUNE, in global and general terms – taking into account all the institutions and companies in the world within all the scientific fields-, ranks in the top 500 worldwide, the top 200 in Western Europe and the top 25 at the national level.
Within its specialization fields, the position of CIC energiGUNE in relation to centers that are similar in nature is of a prominent leadership, by being the 2ndmost important of the planet in the field of Energy and the 3rd in the field of Chemistry. If other entities are included, such as, private companies, the position of the Basque center continues being very distinguished in both scientific fields: top 200 at a global level, top 50 at a European level and top 15 at a Spanish level both in the research on energy and chemistry.
“It needs to be highlighted that we are speaking about these two fields, energy and chemistry, from a general point of view”, has reminded Sara Ortiz, Finance and Strategy Director of CIC energiGUNE. “If we delved deeper into specific fields such as energy storage or electrochemistry our research would probably be placed in even more prominent positions”, she assured.

“Año a año estamos avanzando posiciones en este ranking, lo que pone de manifiesto el impacto y la proyección de nuestro trabajo”, ha manifestado Nuria Gisbert, directora general de CIC energiGUNE. “De hecho, si delimitamos la clasificación a los campos de la energía y la química, nos colocamos ya en el TOP 3 en todos los ámbitos geográficos dentro del ranking de centros semejantes al nuestro ”.
El ranking SCImago ofrece una clasificación de instituciones académicas y relacionadas con la investigación que se ordenan en función de un indicador compuesto. Este índice combina tres conjuntos diferentes de indicadores basados en el rendimiento de la investigación, los resultados de la innovación y el impacto social medido por su visibilidad en la web.
El informe de 2022 refleja, además, que CIC energiGUNE, en términos mundiales y generales -tomando en cuenta a todas las instituciones y empresas del mundo en todas las ramas de la ciencia-, ocupa el top 500 mundial, el top 200 en Europa Occidental y el top 25 a nivel estatal.
Dentro de sus campos de especialización, la posición de CIC energiGUNE respecto a otros centros de similar naturaleza es de liderazgo destacado, al ser el 2º centro más importante del planeta en el ámbito de la Energía y el 3º en el campo de la Química. Si se incluyen a otras entidades como, por ejemplo, las empresas privadas, la posición del centro vasco sigue siendo muy destacada en ambas ramas de la ciencia: top 200 a nivel mundial, top 50 a nivel europeo y top 15 a nivel estatal tanto en el caso de la investigación de energía como química.
“Cabe destacar que estamos hablando de estos dos ámbitos, la energía y la química, desde un punto de vista general”, ha recordado Sara Ortiz, Directora Financiera y de Estrategia de CIC energiGUNE. “Si profundizásemos en ramas concretas como almacenamiento de energía o electroquímica probablemente nuestra investigación podría situarse en posiciones más destacadas aún”, ha asegurado.
