Echemar

Echemar, a different kind of carrier / Echemar, una compañía transportista diferente

Posted on August 2, 2022August 2, 2022 by BP

Echemar is one of the biggest transport enterprises in the Basque Country

To talk about Echemar is to talk about one of the largest transport companies in the Basque Country. It was even considered in its day (2015) by Michelin as the ‘Best Hauliers in the World’, which undoubtedly represents a good letter of introduction to a family company that has revolutionised the sector with a different business model. A model whose profitability is based on the purchase of trucks and having its own staff, not self-employed.

When the companies in the sector were still focusing their management on maximising the commercial margin, the company understood that the environmental aspect was going to be important, which is why they decided to buy their own trucks in order to have a fleet that could be directly controlled and prepared for what they understood to be the future of the sector: sustainable transport.

On average, a truck consumes 35 litres per 100 litres in the sector, while the average Echemar truck is more efficient (28 litres). The company currently has 300 cabs with the most complete equipment on the market and 400 trailers that they design themselves to optimise efficiency. The chassis, for example, is manufactured in Zaragoza and the bodywork in Pamplona, but the design is their own. With a more adaptable and flexible format, the trailers are less resistant and more aerodynamic. The conviction is that a more efficient trailer makes it possible to be more sustainable and more competitive in an increasingly demanding market.

In addition, Echemar puts its workers at the centre of its customers. “If our customers don’t treat our drivers well or abuse them, we don’t have drivers, so we have to appreciate customers who don’t take this into account. We have to look for solutions together to improve the profession. This is a very important message to the industry. If you don’t value your haulier you don’t have a haulier”.

Based in the town of Lezo in Gipuzkoa, this company currently has 300 lorries and 400 trailers that it designs itself to optimise efficiency, a workforce of more than 300 people and a turnover of 40 million euros. Relevant figures far removed, however, from those of its origins, almost half a century ago, when it started with three partners and a very small fleet of lorries. Along the way, between then and now, “hard work, endurance and tenacity”, acknowledges its current manager, Josema Echarri.

Si no valoras a tu transportista no tienes transportista”
