European experts in the field of bioeconomy visit Euskadi projects / Expertos europeos del ámbito de la bioeconomía visitan los proyectos de Euskadi

Posted on May 10, 2022August 16, 2022 by info

The board of directors of the European Forest Institute (EFI), a European benchmark in forestry research, chose Euskadi as the meeting point for its annual meeting. This visit aligned with the Basque Government’s commitment to the bioeconomy and is part of its Circular Economy and Bioeconomy Plan to optimize clean production.

The bio-economy is gaining notoriety in the Basque Country and the territory is moving towards the ecological transition thanks to various projects and initiatives related to the bio-economy and forestry research. In this scenario, the board of directors of the European Forest Institute (EFI), a European benchmark in forestry research, held its annual meeting in the Basque Country, attracted by all the projects that are making the territory emerge as one of the bio-economic focal points of southern Europe.

The Basque Country, bio-economy focus of southern Europe

Enkarterri, and in particular, the Basque Design Center in Güeñes (Bizkaia), has been the first stop on the way for the members of the EFI board of directors, a visit which gave them the opportunity to see first-hand at its production plant in Natxitua (Ea, Bizkaia) the projects of the wood construction company Egoin, whose philosophy lies in sustainable construction, focusing on wood as a construction resource, care for the environment and the use of local raw materials Km0.

The attendees visited the Bizkaia Technology Park to learn about the evolution of the Bioregions platform, which promotes transregional cooperation through various projects for a sustainable and inclusive circular bio-economy based on forests and in which the Basque Country has been actively participating since its creation. Afterwards, they visited the headquarters of the technology centers NEIKER, Gaiker and Tecnalia, benchmark technology centers of the Basque R&D&I ecosystem in the field of bio-economy to discover the technological capabilities of the Basque Country in terms of forestry research and projects related to the economy.

Towards a more sustainable economic and business fabric

The Basque Country has been working for years in the field of circular economy. In fact, according to data from the Basque Government’s Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment, since 2000, the Basque economy has grown by 26%, while the consumption of materials has been reduced by 25% and the volume of urban waste in landfill has been reduced by 56%. In this time of ecological transition, the region’s economy is decoupling itself from the consumption of materials and the generation of waste through different measures and projects such as those mentioned above to promote the circular economy.

In this context, last October, the Basque Government approved the Circular Economy and Bio-economy Plan, an initiative aligned with the European Green Pact, which seeks to boost efficiency in the consumption of raw materials, reduce waste and optimize clean production. Among other challenges, this plan is expected to increase material productivity by 30%, reduce the waste generation rate by 10% and position the Basque Country among the leaders of the circular economy in Europe.

About the European Forest Institute (EFI)

The European Forest Institute (EFI) is the European reference for forestry research and stands out for the policy support it provides to institutions on forest-related issues. It was established in 1993 with the mission to improve international forestry research and to provide decision-makers with unbiased forest-related information at the pan-European level.

It is currently an international entity with 28 member states, in addition to 115 associate members from 37 European countries and regions, including the Basque Country.
