Euskadi shows its progress in bioeconomy at the forestry innovation forum in Brussels

Posted on March 2, 2023 by Irati

The Basque Government, together with the NEIKER technology center, participated on January 18 in the 5th Bioregions Facility Forest Innovation Forum, where the latest developments in forest bioeconomy in Europe were presented. Bioregions Facility, a European platform to promote regional bioeconomy of which Euskadi is part, organized this event that took place in Brussels.

According to the European Commission (EC), the circular bioeconomy is one of the alternatives for moving towards a new economic model that is not based on fossil resources. It combines natural resources with new technological solutions to create a new generation of products to replace those we produce today with oil. The importance of bioeconomy relies on mitigating climate change, mainly.

The Basque Country is committed to the bioeconomy and is one of the leading regions in Europe in this area. To this end, it has the Circular Economy and Bioeconomy Plan 2024, which includes the promotion of the bioeconomy through innovative technologies and is committed to a new model of production and consumption to support the transition of the Basque Country towards a more efficient economy.

In this context, the European platform Bioregions Facility, integrated by the leading regions in Europe in forest bioeconomy (including Euskadi) and led by the European Forest Institute (EFI), held on January 18 the 5th Forest Innovation Forum in Brussels. This initiative has been taking place since 2014 with the main objective of understanding the new framework of regional innovation policies focused on the forestry sector in Europe.

During the conference, the Basque Government, together with the NEIKER technology center, presented its progress in forest bioeconomy. Specifically, the general manager of NEIKER, Leire Barañano, took part in the round table “Priority challenges of the regions for innovation in the forestry sector”. During her speech, Barañano shared what are the priorities of the Basque Country in this field and how they are addressed taking into account the main obstacles.
