Fundiciones Aizpurua exports 35% of its turnover to a dozen countries / Fundiciones Aizpurua exporta a una docena de países un 35% de su facturación

Posted on August 12, 2022August 8, 2022 by BP

Since its origins,  Fundiciones Aizpurua has known how to adapt its production processes to what the context demanded.

The Gipuzkoan firm Fundiciones Aizpurua was founded in the industrial area of Pasajes San Pedro almost 65 years ago. In 1975, it moved to Oiartzun (municipality of Guipuzcoa) where it has dedicated itself exclusively to the centrifugal casting of high-strength bronzes and brass and their machining. In the beginning, the only process was the casting of raw parts for the domestic market, evolving towards “the continuous incorporation of added value to our products -mainly through machining-, as well as the unstoppable internationalisation in the sales markets“, acknowledges Igor Olagüe Ansa, general manager of Fundiciones Aizpurua.

Thus, in the 1980s, Fundiciones Aizpurua began exporting and is now present in a dozen countries. Currently, the Basque company has a turnover of 4.5 million euros, of which “the domestic market accounts for 65% and direct exports account for the remaining 35%. Of these, 30% are destined for Europe and 5% for the rest of the world,” he explains. And it is currently participating “in a programme to intensify our presence in the United States”, the general manager points out.

The importance of the mechanisation process

The Gipuzkoan firm manufactures large bronze parts, up to 2,100 mm in diameter and 1,100 mm in length, for any type of application in machinery, capital goods, etc. The manufacturing process starts with the raw material in the form of a bronze ingot and melts it using tools of its own design to obtain the raw shapes of the parts. “With the subsequent machining process, we optimise the supply of these components to the designs required by our customers,” explains the general manager.

With this process, the Basque company manufactures functional components for all types of machinery and capital goods involved in power generation, civil engineering, automobile and aircraft manufacturing, mining, machine tools, geared motors and the iron and steel industry. “We work for internationally renowned companies such as Orona, ABB, Fagor, Voith and Andritz, among others,” says Igor Olagüe.

With a current workforce of 26 employees, the company has an R&D&I department made up of two people, in a clear commitment to innovation. It has also been collaborating for more than 40 years with the Tecnalia technology centre “in the search for innovations that generate new business opportunities”, Igor Olagüe acknowledges.
