The Lehendakari of the Basque Government, Iñigo Urkullu, laid the foundation stone of the MERLIN Properties data centre in ‘Arasur’.

The Lehendakari stated that “this is a great investment for the future because the Basque Country aspires to become a ‘Digital Hub’ for Southern Europe”. Iñigo Urkullu, accompanied by his Minister for Economic Development and Sustainability and the Environment, Arantxa Tapia, made this statement in the presence of the management team of Merlin Properties, a listed real estate company and leader in the tertiary asset sector on the Iberian territory .
The location of the centre in Arasur, in the historical territory of Araba-Álava, was a strategic decision. On the one hand, the Basque Country has two submarine cables that guarantee the lowest network latency in Europe; on the other hand, Arasur has a competitive and growing logistics, industrial, communications and advanced services ecosystem for the development of the project.
The centre will build an ultra energy-efficient data network with zero net water consumption, which when all the buildings are operational will reach 100 MW. The Lehendakari hopes that this investment will boost investment, growth and employment for all, but especially for young people.

El lehendakari afirmó que “se trata de una gran inversión de futuro porque Euskadi aspira a convertirse en un ‘Hub digital’ para el Sur de Europa”. Iñigo Urkullu, acompañado de su consejera de Desarrollo Económico y Sostenibilidad y Medio Ambiente, Arantxa Tapia, hizo esta declaración en presencia del equipo directivo de ‘Merlin Properties’, compañía inmobiliaria, cotizada y líder del sector de activos terciarios en la Península Ibérica.
La ubicación del centro en Arasur, territorio histórico de Araba-Álava, fué una decisión estratégica. Por un lado, Euskadi cuenta con dos cables submarinos que garantizan la latencia de red más baja de Europa; por otra parte, Arasur goza de un ecosistema logístico, industrial, de comunicaciones y servicios avanzados competitivo y en crecimiento para el desarrollo del proyecto.
El centro construirá una red de datos ultra eficientes energéticamente y con consumo neto de agua nulo que cuando todos los edificios estén operativos alcanzará los 100 MW. El lehendakari espera que esta inversión impulsará la inversión, el crecimiento y el empleo para todos, pero especialmente para la gente jóven.
