'Puppy' Guggenheim Bilbao

Jeff Koons and ‘Puppy’: the guard-dog of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao / Un perrito que vigila el Museo Guggenheim en Bilbao

Posted on January 11, 2022August 16, 2022 by info

Born in Pennsylvania, he was the son of Henry and Gloria, owners of a store dedicated to interior decoration; there he awakened his unique sense of aesthetics. Through drawing and painting, Jeff Koons developed his skills by making copies of masterpieces that were sold in the family business.

During his education at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, he became interested in Byzantine art and American folk art. He painted surrealist-inspired scenes and landscapes and got to meet Salvador Dalí, with whom he spent a day enjoying New York. In Chicago he continued his studies at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago; he learned from Jim Nutt or Ed Paschke, among others, and obtained a degree in Art at the MICA, Maryland Institute College of Art.

He moved to New York, where he became friends with characters of the music scene such as Patti Smith and the Talking Heads; there, through the artists David Salle and Julian Schnabel, he also met the gallery owner Mary Boone, who showed interest in his work. In his East 4th Street apartment, he created sculptures with inflatables and mirrors, motifs that would become part of his signature lines throughout his career in conceptual, minimalist and pop art. Many critics recognize him as the leading representative of kitsch, and he is currently the most sought-after living artist on Earth.

In Bilbao are two of his most recognized creations: the ‘Tulips‘ and the famous topiary sculpture ‘Puppy‘, both elements located outside the Guggenheim Museum, so that only last year 2021 and despite the pandemic, his art has been enjoyed by many more people than the nearly 600,000 who accessed the interior of the museum.

‘Puppy,’ which celebrates its 25th birthday in 2022, is constructed from a steel skeleton that has been recently restored and is made up of 38,000 flowers, ‘shedding its skin’ a couple of times a year. “With Puppy, Koons brings together past and present, employing sophisticated computer modeling to create this work that references a classic 18th century European garden. The giant West Highland Terrier, completely covered in flowering plants, employs the sweetest iconography – flowers and puppies – in a monument to sentimentality,” describes the Museum’s website.

France, Germany, the United States, Great Britain, Italy and Portugal are the countries of origin of the main visitors to this brilliant Basque bid to place the Basque Country at the center of the international cultural avant-garde.

In this LINK you can find the complete personal and artistic biography of Jeff Koons, offered by the Bilbao Museum itself.
