BASQUE.press interview with Itziar Morante, project coordinator at Elkarcredit

Entrevista de BASQUE.press a Itziar Morante, coordinadora de proyectos de Elkarcredit

Elkarcredit is a Basque non-profit association that is mainly dedicated to development cooperation and education for social transformation. The projects they carry out are mainly focused on promoting the right to food sovereignty and peasant and popular feminism and on raising social and critical awareness of ethical and alternative finance. With Itziar’s help, we were able to better understand what Elkarcredit is.

Basquepress: If you had to choose a value to represent Elkarcredit, what would it be?

I think there are several values that the organisation defends. For example, commitment, solidarity, justice, fairness and equality, transparency, etc. One of our jobs is to facilitate a critical financial education, so we try to set an example and be transparent in our accounts. Therefore, we make them available on our website for anyone who wants to see them.

Basquepress: What motivated the foundation of the organisation?

Itziar: What motivated the foundation was to help farmers in Central America to market their products, increase local production and promote their development. For this reason, the organisation wanted to promote the so-called ‘putxitos’, small loans of money at very low or even zero interest. Putxitos are understood in Latin America as something small, but very valuable.

Basquepress: Has the fact that you were founded in the Basque Country facilitated/hindered your progress?

Itziar: Public institutions support our work and the promotion of sustainable human development to fight poverty and inequalities. As far as I know, the Basque Country favours international cooperation.

Basquepress: And as far as the citizens are concerned, do you also believe that there is this involvement?

Itziar: Yes, also. There is a very critical citizenry that is very aware of solidarity in general.

Basquepress: Where does the organisation receive financial support from?

Itziar: We mainly receive aid from public institutions: normally local councils (Donostia, Hernani, Leioa, Andoain…); the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Provincial Council of Guipuzcoa and the Basque Agency for Development Cooperation of the Basque Government.

Basquepress: Could you tell us about some of the activities that the organisation is currently developing?

Itziar: For example, we are producing a rap to raise awareness about the climate crisis, about the consequences it is having in the countries of Central America, which form part of the Dry Corridor, and about their situation.

And in the Basque Country we coordinate Finantzaz Haratago, the Basque Network for Education in Ethical and Alternative Finance. We are promoting the creation of different types of materials that can be used by teachers of 4th ESO and 1st Baccalaureate on the one hand, and by the general public on the other. For example, we have created a series of podcasts in which current issues are discussed.

With this type of actions we provide tools for the acquisition of skills and generate a change of aptitudes that will allow us to achieve a society with social justice and full of rights. Societies in which people must be at the centre of life, in which their needs are recognised.

Basquepress: And who do you collaborate with when carrying out these projects?

Itziar: In international cooperation projects, we work with local partners, who are usually organised women’s groups that are part of international movements such as La Via Campesina.

Basquepress: Are you organising any projects for the future?

Itziar: Now we are going to start a new project with the union of farmers and livestock farmers of Euskadi, to revitalise the agricultural and rural world of Bizkaia with migrant and refugee populations. Different courses on agroecology will be organised. The aim on the one hand is to boost the Basque agricultural and rural world, due to the loss of the primary sector, and on the other hand, to benefit people who come in a situation of vulnerability by broadening their range of work or employment and their possibilities of social and labour immersion.

We will also continue our work to promote the social, solidarity and feminist economy, and to promote critical financial education in support of the social economy.
