NABO (North American Basque Organization) held a ‘Special Tribute’ to five bertsolaris from the United States last Saturday in San Francisco.
NABO (Organización de Vascos de America del Norte) llevó a cabo el pasado sábado en San Francisco un ‘Homenaje Especial’ a cinco bertsolaris de Estados Unidos.
It was special and well deserved for those who in the last three to four decades have kept alive the flame of Basque bertsolaritza in festivals and Basque gatherings, bringing to the community the sung testimony of this form of oral literature. Let’s remember that three of the bertsolaris honored reside in California, the arizkundarra Jesús Arriada, the urepeldarra Gratien Alfaro and the ezterenzubiarra Johnny Curutchet; the oronoztarra Jesús Goñi is from Nevada; and from Wyoming, the gorritiarra Martín Goicoechea. Together with them, Franxoa Bidaurreta, from San Francisco (Esnazu-Aldude) and Joxe Mallea-Olaetxe, from Reno (Munitibar) have been honored as organizers and gai-jartzailes (theme assigners).
In order to participate in the tribute, the renowned bertsolaris Sebastian Lizaso and Aitor Mendiluze came from the Basque Country, as well as Xabi Paya, bertsolari, writer, and translator from Getxo. In fact, Xabi Paya, accompanied online by Valerie Etcharren Arrechea and Xabier Berrueta, both from San Francisco, was in charge of translating simultaneously into English the words of the bertsolaris on a screen, as a support for those who did not understand enough Basque without distracting at the same time those who were following the event normally. The program brought together a little more than a hundred people. Todor Azurtza from San Sebastian and based in Boise, Idaho was the organizer and head of the bertsolaritza program. The president of NABO, Philippe Acheritogaray, from San Francisco, gave a welcoming speech. He was supported by Kate Camino, NABO secretary, in presenting the awards.
The aurreskiu of honor was danced before the honorees by the young Nick Fawce, to the sounds of the txistulari Valerie Etcharren Arrechea. The act gave way to an aperitif, while they prepared the same room for the dinner, setting up tables and chairs, in an evening enlivened by the accordionist Mercedes Mendive, who came from Elko, Nevada. It is worth remembering that the Tribute was prepared for two years ago, but the outbreak of the pandemic prevented its celebration. It was reactivated now that the measures have been opened and it is possible to travel from Europe.
Good work by the organization and those who prepared the bertso-saioa. Together with NABO, the federation that groups the North American euskal etxeas, it was an effort that counted with the support, in addition to NABO, of the Gure Euskal Etxea-Basque Cultural Center and the Basque Club of San Francisco, the Basque Educational Organization (BEO), the Basque Government and the Basque Cultural Institute of Iparralde.
Fue especial y merecido, a personas que en las últimas tres y cuatro décadas han mantenido viva la llama del bertsolarismo vasco en fiestas y encuentros vascos, aportando a la comunidad el testimonio cantado de esta forma de literatura oral. Recordemos que tres de los bertsolaris homenajeados residen en California, el arizkundarra Jesús Arriada, el urepeldarra Gratien Alfaro y el ezterenzubiarra Johnny Curutchet; de Nevada es el oronoztarra Jesús Goñi; y de Wyoming, el gorritiarra Martín Goicoechea. Junto a ellos se ha homenajeado, como organizadores y gai-jartzailes (asignadores de temas) a Franxoa Bidaurreta, de San Francisco (Esnazu-Aldude) y a Joxe Mallea-Olaetxe, de Reno (Munitibar).
Para participar en el homenaje llegaron desde Euskal Herria los reconocidos bertsolaris Sebastian Lizaso y Aitor Mendiluze, así como Xabi Paya, bertsolari, escritor y traductor getxoztarra. De hecho, Xabi Paya, acompañado en el ordenador por Valerie Etcharren Arrechea y Xabier Berrueta, ambos de San Francisco, fue el encargado de traducir simultáneamente al inglés las palabras de los bertsolaris a una pantalla, como apoyo a quienes no entendían lo suficiente el euskera sin distraer al mismo tiempo a quienes seguían el evento con normalidad. El programa reunió a algo más de un centenar de personas. Ejerció de organizador y responsable bertsolarístico, el donostiarra afincado en Boise, Idaho Todor Azurtza. Pronunció unas palabras de bienvenida el presidente de NABO, el sanfranciscano Philippe Acheritogaray. Le apoyó en la entrega de premios Kate Camino, secretaria de NABO.
Bailó el aurreskiu de honor ante los homenajeados el joven Nick Fawce, a sones de la txistulari Valerie Etcharren Arrechea. El acto dio paso a un aperitivo, mientras preparaban la misma sala para la cena, instalando mesas y sillas, en una velada que amenizó la acordeonista Mercedes Mendive, llegada desde Elko Nevada. Conviene recordar que el Homenaje se preparó para hace dos años, pero que el estallido de la pandemia impidió su celebración, reactivada ahora que se han abierto las medidas y es posible viajar desde Europa.
Buen trabajo el de la organización y el de quienes prepararon el bertso-saioa. Junto con NABO, la federación que agrupa a las euskal etxeas norteamericanas, fue un esfuerzo que contó con el concurso, además de NABO, del Gure Euskal Etxea-Basque Cultural Center y el Basque Club de San Francisco, del Basque Educational Organization (BEO), junto al del Gobierno Vasco y el Instituto Cultural Vasco de Iparralde.
