Bizkaia – Basque Country, the only territory in the world with access to twelve supercomputers with this technology
The General Deputy of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe has presented Biqain, Bizkaia Quantum Advanced Industries, the roadmap to accelerate the development and commercialization of quantum technology innovations in the Basque territory.
Biqain, Bizkaia Quantum Advanced Industries
Quantum technology is a disruptive and emerging technology whose development has applications in all sectors, from finance, energy or telecommunications, to medicine, mobility, chemistry or advanced manufacturing.
Since 2021 the Provincial Council of Bizkaia has generated and nurtured an ecosystem in this field formed by universities, technology and research centers, large international technology corporations, companies, clusters, startups and public administrations. This ecosystem is the basis on which Biqain has been designed, which will concentrate all the knowledge of Bizkaia in quantum technology in the ‘María Goyri’ building of the technology park located in the Leioa campus (Bilbao) of the UPV/EHU (Basque Public University).
From there, Lantik, the technology and innovation company of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, will promote the creation and sharing of knowledge and activity related through the access to twelve quantum platforms, making Bizkaia the world’s largest entryway to different quantum technologies from different manufacturers, including D-Wave Fujitsu and IBM.
Biqain will offer two types of support services to companies. Those at nascent levels will be encouraged to establish initial contacts and develop the first use cases with specialized advice and access to computers, while large technology operators will help companies with more advanced knowledge to transform themselves and create their own quantum technology departments.
Likewise, training and capacity building services will be provided for companies, and literacy laboratories will be open to the whole society. The quantum startups of Bizkaia will also move to Leioa (Bilbao), a total of 15, including the newly created ones and those coming from the State (Spain) or other countries. In 2021 the ecosystem included only one company of these characteristics.

Biqain has been presented during the celebration at BEC! (Bilbao Exhibition Centre) of the second edition of ‘Quantum Now’ which, organized by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia with the support of the European Commission, has brought together internationally recognized experts in quantum technology, representatives of the organizations that are part of the pioneering quantum ecosystem of Bizkaia.
