The winery that is making the wine that Christ drank at the Last Supper / La bodega que elabora el vino que bebió Cristo en la Última Cena

They are developing an approach to the wine that was drunk at that time and the Wedding at Cana. Also last year this winery won the award for the best tempranillo in the world at the International Competition AWC Vienna: Seda de Oro.

En ella se está elaborando una aproximación al vino que fue bebido en ese momento y las Bodas de Caná. También el año pasado esta bodega ganó el premio al mejor tempranillo del mundo en el Concurso Internacional AWC Vienna: Seda de Oro.

Located inside this winery we can find archaeological remains of the civilizations that followed one another in this area near Logroño, in the Rioja Alavesa, a region of the Basque Country. Among its vines, there are more than 135 varietals to develop a study on enology.

Valdelana, is the winery that today is producing the very similar to the wine that Christ drank at the Last Supper. A history that begins in the year 1615, where traces of the first Valdelana (the name of the producing family) that was dedicated to winemaking appear.

The Rioja Alavesa, which belongs to the Rioja Denomination of Origin, is where this venture is located. It is a region characterized by a surface rich in lime, a long-suffering grape and high-quality wine. They are aromatic, with low acidity.

Culture and religion have always been closely linked in this area. A little further away, Israeli technicians are trying to elaborate with the Marawi variety an approximation of the wine that Christ drank at the Last Supper, their most secret project, which they hope to complete in about three years.

Marawi, a variety originally cultivated in Bethlehem and considered extinct since 220 A.D., has been revived thanks to archaeological discoveries in Jewish temples, where clay vessels in which wine fermented in ancient Israel were found.

“We have a small plot in Israel and another one here in Spain. This variety was practically extinct, because the Ottomans, known as the Turkish Empire, did not leave vineyards in the Jerusalem area. They believed that wine was something diabolical. Now it has been cultivated again, it is even being harvested,” the researchers comment. “Our goal is that within three years the project will be ready and it will be possible to drink the same wine today that Jesus Christ drank,” they conclude.

Ubicados dentro de esta bodega podemos encontrar restos arqueológicos de las civilizaciones que se sucedieron por esta zona próxima a Logroño, en la Rioja Alavesa, comarca del País Vasco. Entre sus vides, hay más de 135 varietales para desarrollar un estudio sobre la enología. 

Valdelana, es la bodega que hoy está produciendo al muy similar al vino que bebió Cristo en la Última Cena. Una historia que comienza en el año 1615, donde aparecen rastros del primer Valdelana (el nombre de la familia productora) que se dedicó a la vinicultura. 

La Rioja Alavesa, que pertenece a la Denominación de Origen Rioja, es donde está ubicado este emprendimiento. Es una región que se caracteriza por una superficie rica en cal, una uva sufrida y el vino de alta calidad. Son aromáticos, con una acidez baja.

Y siempre lo cultural y religioso han estado muy unidos en esta zona. Un poco más allá, unos técnicos israelíes tratan de elaborar con la variedad Marawi una aproximación al vino que Cristo bebió en la Última Cena, su proyecto más secreto, que espera concluir en unos tres años.

La Marawi, es una variedad cultivaba originalmente en Belén y, considerada extinguida desde el año 220 d.C, y que ha sido revivida gracias a descubrimientos arqueológicos en templos judíos, donde se encontraron vasijas de barro en las que fermentaba el vino en el antiguo Israel. 

“Tenemos un terreno pequeño en Israel y otro aquí en España. Esta variedad estaba prácticamente desaparecida, porque los otomanos, conocido como el Imperio turco, no dejaron viñedos en la zona de Jerusalén. Creían que el vino era algo diabólico. Ahora se ha vuelto a cultivar, incluso se está cosechando”, comentan los investigadores. “Nuestro objetivo es que dentro de tres años el proyecto esté listo y se pueda beber en la actualidad el mismo vino que bebió Jesucristo”, concluyen.
